You Should've Thought Twice

Four sat miserably on the ground, wondering if the strange voices were right. Everything they talked about came true.

"Did you know about the Terrible Twos?"

He half expected them not to reply.

Yes. We did. We tried to tell you but you wouldn't believe us.

"C-can I really trust you?"

Of course. If you need anything at all, we'll be truthful.

"So you won't hide anything?"

What part of 'truthful' do you not understand? The voice asked jokingly.

"You guys were trying to get my attention earlier, right?"

Yes.

"What did you want to tell me?"

That.. That we want to help you.

"Help me?"

Yes, we wanted to help you get even with everybody who hid this from you.

"But.. I don't think I can.."

Of course you can. That stupid 'Spiderblock' can't do anything right.

"No!" He said a bit too loudly, listening for anyone coming, he continued quietly, " I mean I can pull it off maybe, but, then I'll really be evil."

What's wrong with that?

"Being evil was something.. it was something I was trying not to do.."

Listen Four, if you're trying to be good, everyone else has to believe that, and with what I've seen so far, nobody does. Everyone sees you as the bad guy, if they want you to be the villian, be the villain.

"But.. what if I hurt somebody?"

Four, they pushed you away, every time they noticed you, everybody's guard went up. They obviously don't want you around, but we do, we want you to be our friend, we want to be with you, we're going to pick you up went you're down, we're gonna help you through the pain of betrayal, and we will never ever leave you behind.

Four nearly cried, "You.. you promise?"

We promise.

"O..Okay.." Four got up.

Good job Four, this is the first step to healing.

First step.

His very first steps were with Two, the first time he shifted was with Three, the first thing he ever carried was One, the first number bigger than him was Five, the first dice he ever rolled was with Six, the first lucky number he saw was Seven, the first superhero was Eight, the first square was Nine, his first sighting of zero was Ten.

He was going to miss them.

Eleven helped him face his fear, Twelve taught him how to use rays, Thriteen didn't teach him anything, but just being his friend without hesitation was enough. He'll never forget the time that he put square wheels on a skateboard which led to Fourteen. Being part of step squad was fun, seeing a square made of squares was amazing, Seventeen's weird sculpture of Three was hilarious, watching Eighteen become devastated when he figured out that he couldn't make Four rays was an experience of a lifetime.

He'll never get to laugh at his funny faces again.

Nineteen always looked on the bright side of things, Twenty was always so polite, Twenty-one always encouraged him to discover more, Twenty-two was not really around much, but when he was, he always made the best out of it. Twenty-three never minded any shortcomings of his own, not even his tiny face that everyone keeps laughing about. Twenty-four was almost a bigger Eighteen, which made Eighteen's devastation funnier because, unlike him, she could make four rays.

That was fun.

Twenty-five was the biggest square he's ever seen, and Twenty-six let him wear his sunglasses sometimes.

Even though Twenty-seven overwhelmed him a bit, she was fun to be around, and Twenty-eight expressed a love for patterns that he's never seen before.

And they all lied to him.

Never thought to tell him about a problem he had.

Probably didn't even care.

And Four had enough of it.

"Right, if they want me to be the villian, I'll be it."

It's okay, we're here to keep you company. Let's seek revenge on those who hurt you.

"Yeah, I'll make them regret everything they did to me! I make them all pay!"

That's the spirit!

Four headed for the nearest window. But before he could open it, Nine opened the door.

"Four? Where are you going?"

Four looked to the square that he once saw as a role-model, and grinned.

"Away."

"Away? To where?"

"To be with my real friends."

"But, we're your friends."

Four shook his head, opening the window and sitting on the edge.

"Then you should've thought twice before calling me the villian."

With that, he leaped from the window, and ran off into the night.
