Mark sighed

Mark sighed.

"We can't..." he admitted quietly. "I'm too busy, and she's busy too...she's got so much studying."

"Obviously she takes breaks, Mark," his mom said gently. "You probably don't even have her number, do you?"

"I...yeah," he sighed again. "I couldn't keep in contact when she changed her number. Do you have it?"

"Of course. I talk to her almost every day, unlike you," she chuckled.

"Send it to me, will you?" he asked.

"Yeah. I'll hang up now~ Bye~"

"Bye, mom~"

The call ended.

A few seconds later, his phone buzzed.

He opened the message and stared at the number for a moment longer than necessary.

Tiffany.

He glanced at the clock. It was late in Houston. Way too late.

He hesitated.

"Just do it," he muttered to himself.

He pressed call. The phone rang.

Once. Twice. Voicemail.

Mark swallowed nervously and cleared his throat.

"Hey, dude...guess who? It's me. Mark. Um...it's been a while, yeah. I finally got your number and I just...wanted to catch up, I guess. Whenever you're free. So...yeah. Call me whenever you can. And, uh...don't overwork yourself. Bye."

He ended the call and dropped his phone onto the bed, heart beating way too fast for something so small.

The loud alarm made Tiffany jolt awake.

She squinted at the thick biology textbook in front of her, highlighters scattered everywhere, notes scribbled in the margins.

She groaned softly.

"Here," Alex said sleepily, handing her a cup of coffee. "You look dead."

Tiffany smiled. "Mm. Thank you."

She took a sip and unlocked her phone.

Missed call. Voicemail. Unknown number.

She frowned slightly, then put in her AirPods so she wouldn't wake Alex.

She played it.

"...hey, dude, guess who? It's me. Mark..."

Her breath hitched.

Her lips curved into a wide smile before she could stop it.

"...don't overwork yourself. Bye."

She clicked her tongue softly, trying not to squeal.

"Idiot," she whispered, smiling anyway.

She saved the number immediately.

Then texted.
