1. Get a planner (paper, digital planner, etc): High school is busy with all of the assignments, homework, labs and tests, so writing the tasks down will keep you to stay on track.
2. Find extracurriculars: Compared to my middle, high school has so many interesting clubs, so go out there and start to explore your interest. I do not recommend you join something just for a college app, join something that you love and commit to it.
3. Learn more about standardized testing: This is optional, and it depends on where you want to go after high school. If you prepare for SAT, ACT, IELTS early, you will save more time for studying as your class gets more challenging.
4. Choose classes that are your hobbies: It might be quite early to determine what you are going to do in the future, so during the first year, try to explore different options. Once you know what you like to do, you can narrow down your course selections onto that path.
5. Chat with teachers: I realize this tip this year when I start talking more with my advisory/history teacher. They not only will answer your questions but also give you a lot of advice (and even motivation for me!)
6. Take notes well: Don't just type everything on the computer, I recommend either you take notes by hand on paper or on an iPad (if you have one). Colour-code your notes and try to be organized as much as possible.
7. Be independent: In high school, my teachers usually just give you a really broad topic to write a research about, and we have to create our research questions and write essays. Therefore, teachers will not guide you as much as in middle school, but still, remember they will always be available for you to ask questions.
