Chapter 7: The coming storm

(Emerald's POV)

We took Yang and Weiss back into the living room and I took the opportunity to light the fireplace. Weiss was sitting right in front of it while Blake put a blanket on her back before sitting next to Yang. Suddenly, we heard a knock at the door. Ruby got up and walked towards the entrance. We saw Qrow and Night enter the room, removing the snow they had on them.

"So?" I asked.

"It's the same in every house. There are bodies in every bed." Night replied.

"It's like the whole estate just went to sleep and never woke up." Qrow adds as he approaches the fireplace.

"So we're not staying here, right?" Weiss asks.

"Sorry to disappoint you, but yes, we're going to stay here." Night replies.

"We don't have a choice. Storm outside's only getting worse. We'd freez to death before we made it anywhere." He replied.

"It won't be the first time I've slept in an abandoned place." Night sighs.

"Where did you sleep before?" I asked him.

"In what's left of our parents' house." He replied. I was surprised

"Oh yeah, that's true... Were you able to bring anything back from it?" I asked him.

"Besides the bike, not much." He replied. A silence intervened for a few seconds.

"Well. Might as well get comfortable." Maria says to us as she gets up from the couch and heads to the library.

"Yeah, fat chance." Yang complains.

"Okay then... Let's do something. If this place wasn't been abandoned, it might still have supplies we could use." Ruby tells us.

"Hey, yeah! Maybe even a car." Oscar guesses.

"I'll do another sweep of the grounds. No one goes anywhere alone." Qrow says to us. "Night, are you coming with me?" He asks him.

"If you want." He replies before leaving the house with Qrow.

"Yang and I can search the other buildings for vehicles." Blake tells us.

"Fine. Whatever gets me out of this house." She replied. They left the room, followed by Ruby, who closed the door behind her. Weiss got up and left the room as well. Only me, Oscar and Maria were left.

"I'll tell you what: You keep that fire fed, and I'll find us a story to read before bed." She says to Oscar.

"Oh, that would be great!" I exclaimed.

"Do you like having stories read to you?" She asked me.

"Yes! I mean, when I was little, in the orphanage." I replied.

"In the orphanage? But what happened to your parents?" She asked me. A silence intervened before I sighed.

"They were... killed..." I replied.

"Oh... I'm sorry... I didn't know..." Maria apologized before clearing her throat. "So... What were your favorite stories?" She asked me, changing the subject.

"Well... I really like the stories around 'The Grimm Reaper'. Do you know any of them?" I asked her.

"Ooooh... I didn't know you liked those old stories." She replied.
