Chapter 8: The Apathy

(Narrator's POV)

The team RWBY has just jumped into the well to get the Relic. At the top, Night sits on the side of his motorcycle and begins to wait.

"Do you think you'll be okay down there?" Emerald asks as she moves closer to her brother.

"Sure. What could be down there?" The young man replies.

"I don't know." The young woman replies by sitting on the side of the sidecar.

"Tell me: Do you think we should give up the Lamp too?" Night asks her.

"I don't really have a strong opinion. On the one hand, I feel like I should, but at the same time, that would be defeating the mission." The young woman replied. A silence intervened for a few moments before Emerald spoke again.

"Don't you think the others are acting weird?" She asked him. Night looked at his sister out of the corner of his eye.

"Yes, I did. I'll admit I had a hard time recognizing them. Determination like that, evaporating overnight... It's not normal." Night replies.

"Even if we can't kill Salem, that doesn't mean we can't stop her. If we look at it that way, then there is hope that we can." The young woman replied. The young man looks back at his sister.

"It's true that I hadn't thought about it... Jinn only said we couldn't destroy her." He said. Suddenly, the two teenagers heard Maria gasp:

"Is something wrong, Ms. Calavera?" Night asked her. Suddenly, the trio heard a scream from the well.

"Hurry!" Maria says to the two teens as they rush to the well. The trio jumps in and rushes toward the RWBY team.

"What could Ruby found to scream like that!?" Night asks Maria and Emerald.

"I don't know!" Emerald replied. Maria walks past the two teenagers before running into the team RWBY:

"Run! Now!" She yells at them. The two teenagers look back and see a group of Grimms: Tall monsters with thin bodies.

"What are these things?" Night asks, surprised, as he puts his rifle on his shoulder.

"Apathys! Run!" Emerald yells to the team RWBY before fleeing. The group followed Maria hoping to find an exit.

"You know these things!? " The young man asks Emerald

"Of course! These Grimms are sucking up your will so they can kill you! Facing them is too dangerous, even for you!" She replies to him. The group began to hear a piercing scream. The group slowed down and Night covered his left ear with his hand before lowering his right arm under the weight of his weapon

"This way!" Ruby said to the group as they saw a hole in the stone wall. The group ran in that direction. They passed holes filled with Apathys, which began to follow them. The group continued to run before they came upon a wine cellar with a staircase.

"A staircase! Great!" Emerald exclaims before Weiss pats her shoulder and points out the dozens of Apathys in the room.

"Hurry!" Yang shouts. The group follows her, but the Grimms let out a shrill scream, sucking the will out of the group. Everyone falls to the ground, including Night, under the weight of his shotgun.

(Night's POV)

I couldn't get up anymore. It was as if I had no strength in my arms or legs. I was crawling towards my gun, but I couldn't lift it. I knew it was heavy, but it never felt that heavy to me.

"One exit... An exit!" Maria says to us as she grabs onto the stairway railing. I look behind me and see Blake collapsing to the ground.

"Blake... Get up... This is no time to sleep!" I tell her.
