‘Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain’
                                         – Axel Rose

It had taken a week for the first announcements that ‘Just around the corner’ was closing down to finally go out and the first thing that Arthit did when he got to work at the start of the next week,  was to decorate the large window of the store with signs saying ‘40% OFF’, ‘CLOSING DOWN’ and ‘EVERYTHING MUST GO’, as well as the many of the gadgets that were left over stock that needed to be sold quickly. Even though he was ever so slowly coming to terms with the store closing, he still felt a pang of pain in his heart when, on that Monday morning, he had instructed Bertie, Rome and Kao to hang even more signs inside. Big signs that were attached to metal chains dangling down from the ceiling or pinned to the front of the metal shelves. It was heart breaking to see but he knew he had to stop pining. He knew his parents wouldn’t want him to dwell on it and to see this as a new opportunity to go and do something more for himself. He couldn’t help it though. There were things all around him that reminded him of his parents.

It wasn’t long until the first customers turned up and as the day wore on the small bell above the store door had not stopped ringing once since Arthit had first flipped the small sign to say ‘Open’. The store quickly filling up with customers as Arthit had kept a smile on his face and his polite demeanour, waii’ing at each customer as they entered but that was all on the outside. On the inside he felt like he was grieving for his parents all over again, loosing parts of them as customers slowly bought items from the shelves and the store emptied little by little.
Heading into the small back storeroom, to pick up another box of gadgets, Arthit takes a moment to lean against one of the smooth grey walls. A slight feeling of loneliness coming across him even though he was surrounded by people. It reminded him of what it had felt like after Frank had left.

Flashback.....

The apartment had gone very quiet and although Arthit was used to it being quiet at times, this time it felt odd. He had been stood in his front room, as soon as the door was closed, noticing the empty spaces around him that had once been occupied by something of Frank’s. The partially empty bookcase , at one side, that had held his New York Times best sellers and his many books on ‘Why technology was bad?’. The missing typewriter with the pile of cut out articles from the table and a number of other things which reminded Arthit of Frank’s many quirky ways. All gone now, leaving behind small gaps where they used to belong.

The decision to break up had been right though. Arthit wouldn’t go back on that at all but now it had made him fell lonely. Maybe he should get a pet. Something that will keep him company. A turtle maybe or even a couple of cats. He had always liked cats.

He had moved over to the couch and had picked up his guitar, letting his fingers strum over the strings when the front door had opened and like some sort of angelic being Rome had walked in, carrying a crate of pink milks in his arms. After that, the loneliness seeped away slowly as they spent the evening drinking.

End of flashback......

A small pat on his shoulder brings him back and he notices Kao starring at him. His eyebrows scrunched up as he looks worried.

“You ok, P’Arthit?”

As good as he can, Arthit smiles at him, giving him a nod as he says ‘I’m fine’ before walking back into the shop floor. Kao watching him leave.
