Chapter 5: Lunch

Science, English, and Advisory passed without any problems. During those classes, Ahsoka had met Ki-Adi Mundi, Satine Kryze (who clearly had something going on with Obi-Wan), and her advisor, Kit Fisto, who she liked immediately. His cheerfulness was contagious.

It was finally lunch, one of Ahsoka's favorite periods, and she now stood in line with Anakin and Rex.

"Who's the new kid?" a female voice drawled from behind her.

Ahsoka looked over her shoulder. That voice had not sounded nice. "Who's asking?" she shot back, which probably wasn't the best idea.

The girl was around her age, maybe a year older. She was very pale, with ice-blue eyes. Her blonde hair was shaved on one side of her head, and it hung on the other. She was also tall, much taller than Ahsoka. That seemed to be the trend of the day.

"Asajj Ventress," the girl said proudly. Ahsoka narrowed her eyes slightly. She had only known this Asajj for less than a minute and she already wanted to punch her.

"I'm Ahsoka Tano," Ahsoka said carefully.

Ventress raised an eyebrow, but Ahsoka could tell that she didn't care. "I see you made some new friends." Ventress continued, looking at Anakin and Rex, though her gaze lingered on Anakin for a second later. That would be a conversation for later.

"I did."

The situation was becoming tenser by the second, and Ahsoka didn't know why. Ventress was glaring at her like she had stolen something. Or someone.

"What's the problem?" Rex asked, trying to break the tension.

"Oh, nothing," Ventress said. Ahsoka didn't believe her.

Anakin sighed, taking a step closer. "We have to get lunch. Bye, Ventress." He pushed both Ahsoka and Rex to the serving station, leaving a surprised Ventress alone.

"That was weird," Ahsoka commented.

"Happens a lot," Rex said. "She mostly bugs us when Padmé's around. I suspect she's in love with the General," he added more quietly. So that's what it was.

"Hey," Anakin accused, his head whipping around. "That is so not true. The only girl interested in me is Padmé."

Ahsoka giggled. "That's not what I've noticed today, Skyguy. Girls constantly stare at you when we're in the hall. And they stare at Rexter too."

Anakin rolled his eyes, facing forward again to order his food. Rex blushed, rubbing the back of his head. "If you say so, kid," he mumbled. He glanced around to see if there were any female onlookers. There were, but he obviously didn't notice.

Ahsoka laughed, punching his shoulder playfully. "You guys are so oblivious."

They quickly got their food and sat at one of the less crowded tables, where Cody was already seated. Ahsoka had gotten a hamburger (she'd always had a thing for eating meat), onion rings, Sprite, and a chocolate chip cookie. Anakin had a giant hamburger with two patties, bacon, lettuce, and nothing else besides a Dr. Pepper. Rex and Cody, to her surprise, besides large hamburgers as well, had about four cookies each, plus chocolate milk for Rex.

"Whoa, you and Cody have a real sweet tooth," Ahsoka gasped. "That's a lot of cookies."

"Rex and I are hungry all the time," Cody explained. "Sugar is a great way to get a lot of calories quickly. And, you know, it tastes good too."

Anakin took a bite out of his massive burger. He tried to say something, but his mouth was full.

"Don't talk with your mouth full, Ani," Padmé said as she sat down next to him. Her lunch consisted of two oranges, a salad, and herbal tea. "It's rude."

Anakin swallowed. "Sorry, Padmé," he mumbled.

"What's everyone doing after school today?" Cody asked while munching on a cookie.

"I have Debate Club," Padmé said.

"Track," Anakin said.

Then, Rex. "Archery, but you knew that, Cody."

"Track, and maybe archery if you're still up for teaching me?" Ahsoka looked at Rex hopefully.

"Sure, kid. It starts at 4:00."

Meanwhile, Anakin was trying to snatch one of Padmé's oranges. She slapped his hand, rolling her eyes. "Anakin, you have more than enough food," she scolded but kissed his cheek anyway.

Anakin just grinned at her.

"So, what is your foster home like?' Ahsoka asked Rex and Cody.

"Eh, it's not all bad. There are only boys there right now, so it can be pretty noisy," Rex explained. "We're all like a band of brothers. Well, mostly. One of the kids, Slick, went and caused a heap of trouble a few months ago."

"Yeah, he started playing really mean pranks on the younger kids, and then he had the nerve to try to beat us up," Cody muttered.

"What happened to him?" Ahsoka asked quietly.

"Lama Su, he's the head of the foster home, by the way, called the cops, and they took him away. We haven't seen him since. I think he knew Ventress too. Makes sense." Rex scowled.

"Wow," Ahsoka replied.

Padmé looked surprised, so Ahsoka figured she hadn't heard this story yet.

"Were you guys hurt badly?" Ahsoka said, realizing that was something she should have asked earlier.

"Nothing we can't handle," Cody said with a smirk.

"Yeah, just a few bruises...and a dislocated joint or two," Rex added.

Anakin chuckled. "You guys always say things like that."

"Look who's talking," Padmé said, smirking.

After a few minutes, everyone had finished their food except for Ahsoka and Padmé. Ahsoka had her cookie and Padmé had one orange.

"Ahsoka, did I say how much I love your hair?" Padmé asked. "The blue really brings out your eyes."

"Thank you, Padmé." Blushing slightly, Ahsoka looked down. Not many people mentioned her hair. Those who did made fun of it, at least at her old school.

Ahsoka realized that her cookie was missing after a moment. Since Anakin was too busy making puppy eyes at Padmé, and Cody was too far from her, Ahsoka immediately knew who the culprit was.

Looking to her right, her suspicions were confirmed.

"Rex, give it back!" she demanded, slapping his hand playfully. "You've already had four!"

He gave her a mischievous grin but returned the cookie.

Sighing, Ahsoka split the cookie in half and gave him the larger piece. She giggled when his eyes lit up.

"Has he always been like this?" she asked her friends.

"Pretty much," Cody said. "Though I have to admit, I haven't seen Rex play a prank in a while."

"Slick killed the mood," Rex grumbled, scowling.

Silence filled the table.

Rex sighed, finishing his cookie. "Sorry. I shouldn't focus on Slick anymore."

"Slick's actions weren't your fault," Anakin reminded him.

"He made his choice," Cody added, patting Rex's shoulder.

"I've gotta say, it did feel good playing a prank," Rex said, brightening at his friends' encouragement. "Wasn't as successful as I was hoping, though."

Ahsoka smirked at him, prepared to make a snippy comeback, but the bell interrupted her.

"There's the bell," Anakin sighed. The five of them stood, heading to the trash can to throw away their garbage. They then headed to their separate classes.

I've had this one done for a while, sorry for not updating sooner! Hopefully, I can start publishing chapters more regularly.
