Although I hated cold showers I decided to take one to awaken my nerves. Gigi had left, and Maya was in her bed, so I was alone with just my thoughts to keep me company.
I quickly finished up in the shower, brushed my teeth then headed off to my room. When I got there, I saw Maya sitting on my bed with a saddened look on her face.
"Papa was supposed to come today," she sulks. "He was supposed to hang out with me."
Ryder was supposed to take her and Gigi out today. The stupid bastard planned it himself, and told her he wouldn't miss it for the world, yet he bailed. Like he always does!
"Baby I'm so sorry," I say, hugging her tightly.
"Does he hate me mamma?" She asks sobbing into my arms. "I don't know what I did."
My heart cracked when she said this. She thinks it her fault that he bailed on her.
"Listen to me Maya, you are not at fault," I say softly. "He is."
She nodded her head gently as she continued to cry quietly into my arms. Maya rarely cries, so when she does, you know she's hurt.
"I just want him to love me like you do mamma," she whimpers.
I didn't know what to say to that. My breath was staggered and my eyes filled with tears. It pained me to see her like this.
That's why I truly believe the statement of 'every child deserves a parent, but not every parent deserves a child'. Ryder did not deserve to know such a sweet, kind, caring girl like Maya.
"Come here," I say, wrapping her in my blanket.
She curls herself up into a ball, then falls asleep on top of me. To know that she is safe in my arms, I soon fall asleep as well.
I found myself dreaming about Maya having a family, with brothers and sisters, and Ryder actually being a good father.
That happy dream soon came to a halt when I felt the coldness of the air hit me. I open my eyes to find Maya gone.
My heart quickened and fear started to overtake my mind. Whenever Maya slept with me, she never left my bed until I woke up. No matter how late I would sleep, she would just sit beside me until I was awake.
I got up out of bed quickly, and ran out of my room, hoping she was just in another room.
As soon as I open the bedroom door, a delicious aroma of cinnamon and syrup whafts into my nose. I run into the kitchen to see Xavier making Maya have a giggle fit, by doing the stupidest dance I've ever seen in my life.
"What the hell are you doing!" I shout.
"Oh look! Mama's awake," he smirks. "Care for some French toast Nova?"
I look at Maya who's smile would make any heart melt. Her dimples were prominent, and her eyes were large and happy.
I glare at Xavier, and nudge my head over to the living room so he'd make sure to follow me.
"I'll be back, mija," he smiles, patting her head softly.
"Okay xavy!"
Xavy? Maya hasn't even given me a nickname!
Xavier walks slyly behind me, his tattooed hands in his pockets. I felt his eyes on me as he headed into the living room.
"What the hell are you doing in my house!" I snap, trying to keep my voice at a whisper.
"Well good morning to you too," he says.
"I'm not joking Xavier!"
"Never said you weren't."
