Mia's POV (Three Weeks Later)
I was driving to the hospital, and once I got there, I changed into my scrubs and met up with Arizona.
"I'm gonna ask Teddy out on a date today. What do you think?" I asked while we worked through some paperwork.
"That would be cute, but where?" Arizona asked, looking up at me with a curious smile.
"Maybe a picnic in the backyard of my house," I suggested.
"Oh my god, that's adorable!" Arizona gushed.
I nodded, feeling a little nervous but mostly excited.
"Have you two done it yet?" she asked, teasingly.
I just looked at her and smiled. "Not yet... I don't know about Teddy, but I want to make it special."
"Okay, Teddy is so lucky to have you. You're the sweetest," Arizona said with a grin.
I laughed, and we continued our pre-op work. Afterward, I heard that Teddy was performing surgery, so I decided to watch from the gallery.
Inside the OR, the tension was palpable.
"Well, Walter is lucky. Looks like he doesn't have to lose any lung," Hunt commented.
"Yeah, no thanks to his kid," Avery muttered.
"It was an accident. That happens," Teddy said, ever the professional.
"That kid shouldn't have been there in the first place," Derek said, shaking his head.
"Well, he's the guy's son. Family businesses... There's something to be said for loyalty," Teddy countered.
"You put a person in a job like that because they have the skill to handle it," Derek argued. "Not because they are your friend or your kid."
I rolled my eyes at Derek's self-righteousness.
"Are you intentionally equating me with the idiot son who dropped the crab cage on his dad, or is that just a happy coincidence?" Teddy asked, clearly annoyed.
"Alright, we're ready to extract the hook," Hunt interjected, trying to steer the focus back.
"Nobody move apart from Dr. Hunt," Derek instructed. "On my count. One..."
"Two..." Hunt continued. I watched with growing anxiety.
Then, Teddy sneezed.
The hook shifted.
"I'm sorry," Teddy said quickly, her face falling.
"Snagged the artery," Hunt said, his voice tight.
I could see it written all over Teddy's face—she felt awful.
"God bless you," Derek muttered dryly.
After the surgery, I went to grab something to eat. As the elevator doors opened, I saw Teddy stepping inside. She looked devastated, on the verge of tears.
I stepped in beside her and pressed my floor. "Do you have anything to do right now?" I asked softly.
She shook her head.
I stopped the elevator. "You have a cold. It could have happened to anyone."
Teddy's eyes were already brimming with tears. "Yeah, but it didn't. It was me—on the day Shepherd is interviewing Evans for my job."
She let out a shaky breath. "And I'm the new girl around here who no one really knows... And even Yang is... in love with Evans. And I—"
She sneezed again. "And I have a freaking cold."
