I woke up, took a shower, and went downstairs to watch TV while reading. Callie is pregnant, and she and Arizona are going on a trip, so I'm alone at home. I don't really feel like eating. I can go back to work tomorrow, though I won't be able to do surgeries yet. At least I'll be able to work again.
My phone rang, and I saw Lexie's name on the screen.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Everyone told me not to tell you, but I have to," Lexie said, her voice uneasy.
"Lexie? What's wrong?" I asked, already feeling a knot in my stomach.
"It's Callie. Arizona and Callie were in a car crash. Arizona is fine, but Callie..." Lexie's voice wavered.
I didn't let her finish. I hung up, threw on some normal clothes, and drove straight to the hospital. The moment I arrived, I spotted Alex.
"Where is she?" I demanded.
"In the OR," he said.
I rushed up to the gallery and found Arizona sitting there, looking devastated.
"What happened?" I asked.
"I asked her to marry me, and a truck came out of nowhere," Arizona said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You asked her to marry you while you were driving?!" I shouted, my frustration boiling over. "You couldn't have just pulled over to the side of the road?"
"Mia, calm down," Alex warned.
"No, I'm not going to calm down! She's my best friend, my person, and because of you, she might die! How could you be so careless?!"
Arizona looked heartbroken, and guilt washed over me. I had let my emotions take over, and I knew I had to step away.
"I'm sorry," I whispered before walking out to get some fresh air.
After the surgery, they moved Callie to the ICU. I found April standing nearby.
"How is she?" I asked.
"I can't tell you," April said hesitantly.
Before I could respond, Addison arrived.
"Please, just give me an update," I pleaded.
April hesitated, and I exhaled sharply. "Fine. Sorry." I turned away and headed to the attendings' lounge, sitting on the couch. I couldn't hold it in anymore—I broke down crying.
I felt someone sit beside me.
"You're not supposed to be here," Teddy said softly.
"My best friend is dying. I have to be here," I choked out.
"I promise I'll do everything I can to save her," Teddy reassured me, kissing my forehead before pulling me into her arms.
I clung to her, letting my tears soak into her scrubs. "It's going to be okay, I promise," she murmured.
I pulled back slightly and looked into her eyes before kissing her. She kissed me back, and for a brief moment, the world around us disappeared.
"I believe in you," I whispered.
Teddy smiled. "Thank you, Princess."
Hearing her call me that made me blush. She wiped my tears away just as Addison walked in.
"Addison," I acknowledged her.
Teddy glanced at her and muttered, "Oh, you're the girl."
"Teddy, let it go. It's fine," I said, placing my hand over hers. She nodded.
"Can we talk alone?" Addison asked.
"How abou—" Teddy started, but I cut her off. "Teddy, it's okay."
Teddy nodded, kissed me once more, then left the room.
"So, that's your girlfriend?" Addison asked, a small smile on her lips. I nodded.
"How's LA?" I asked, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere.
"Nice. I have a beach house."
"That's great." I looked down, feeling the weight of everything settle on me.
"How have you been since..." Addison trailed off.
"I'm fine," I lied. "I didn't leave my room for weeks. Callie had to take care of me. I can't lose her... She's my person."
Addison gave me a sympathetic look. "Why aren't you working?"
"I was shot during the hospital shooting. Tomorrow is supposed to be my first day back, but when I heard about Callie, I had to be here."
She nodded, understanding. Just then, Teddy walked in with coffee.
"Hey, I got you coffee," Teddy said, handing me my favorite drink.
"Thank you," I said, smiling up at her.
"Of course, Princess," she replied.
Addison excused herself, and Teddy and I sat back, her arm wrapping around me as I rested my head on her shoulder.
"You okay?" she asked.
I nodded. "I'm fine."
Then Owen walked in. "Teddy, we need you in the meeting."
Teddy kissed the top of my head before following him. I stepped outside the room, joining Cristina, Alex, and Meredith.
"Sooo... Addison and Teddy in the same room?" Alex teased.
"They already met. Teddy was really protective of me," I said.
"Ooo, Addison's looking over here," Cristina noted.
"I don't care," I said.
"Oh, she's in love," Alex sang.
"Shut up!" I said, blushing.
"I like Altman more for you than Addison," Meredith admitted.
"Me too," I said, watching the scene unfold in front of me.
"I hope Callie is going to be okay," I whispered. "She has to be."
Meredith squeezed my shoulder in comfort.
Needing air, I stepped outside and found Addison following me.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Nothing. We're about to go into surgery," Addison said.
I nodded. "You know, for the first few weeks, I hated you."
Addison looked at me in surprise.
"But then I realized hating you was exhausting," I admitted.
Addison smirked. "Can we at least be friends?" I asked.
She smiled. "Of course."
We walked back inside, and she headed to the OR. I stayed in the gallery with Mark and Arizona, watching.
"She's going to be okay," I said firmly.
Mark nodded. "She has to be."
After the surgery, they moved Callie to the ICU. I rushed to her room.
"Hey, Ca. I miss you," I whispered. "You're my best friend. I wanted to tell you that Addison and I are friends now. I'm coming back tomorrow—back to surgery. I'm excited but also terrified."
Arizona walked in. "Can I have some alone time with Callie?"
"Of course," I said before leaving to find Teddy.
I found her in the attendings' lounge. "Hey," I said, sitting beside her.
"Hi, Princess," Teddy greeted before pulling me into a kiss.
"I really like you, Teddy," I whispered between kisses.
"I really like you too, Princess," she said, kissing my cheek.
Later, we went to my house, changed into pajamas, and curled up in bed watching movies until we fell asleep in each other's arms.
