Mia's POV (9 days later)
I woke up and went downstairs, spotting Derek making breakfast. Without a word, I grabbed my keys and headed to the hospital. Once there, I changed into my scrubs and met up with Arizona.
"So, what do we have today?" I asked.
"Nothing. You have the day off," Arizona said casually.
"What? Who said that?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"Derek."
I rolled my eyes. "Great."
"Bye, I guess," I muttered, wandering aimlessly through the hospital halls. My pager kept going off with 9-1-1 messages, but I ignored them. I just wanted the pain to stop. If it weren't for Meredith, Teddy, and Callie, I would've left this place a long time ago.
As I walked, I noticed an older man pacing. "Hello, sir. Do you need help?" I asked politely.
He turned to me with an unreadable expression. "Are you a surgeon?"
I frowned. "Excuse me?"
Before I could react, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at me. My heart pounded, but a strange calm washed over me. The thought of dying felt almost... peaceful.
"ARE YOU A SURGEON!?" he yelled, his voice shaking with anger.
I swallowed hard. "Yes. I am a surgeon."
The gunshot echoed before I fully processed his words. A sharp pain seared through my chest, and I collapsed to the floor.
Teddy's POV
Owen and I were escorting a patient out of the hospital, aware there was an active shooter. Owen led the way as we moved cautiously.
"So, what's going on with you and Mia?" Owen asked.
I smiled despite the tension in the air. "I like her a lot. She's amazing."
"She asked you to be her girlfriend?" he asked, already knowing the answer.
I nodded. "I said yes."
Owen gave me an approving look. "I'm really happy for you two."
We kept moving, but suddenly, Owen stopped. My stomach twisted as I followed his gaze to a pool of blood.
"Oh my God," I whispered, rushing forward.
Mia lay motionless, blood staining her scrubs. My breath hitched. "Owen, is she okay?"
"She's alive," Owen assured me, but I could see the worry in his eyes.
"You take the patient. I'll stay with her," Owen decided.
"What?! Owen, I can't leave her!" I cried, my voice breaking.
"Teddy, we have no choice," he said firmly. "I promise I'll take care of her. But you have to get this patient to safety."
Tears blurred my vision as I nodded and left, my heart breaking with every step.
Owen's POV
Once Teddy was gone, I scooped Mia up and rushed her into an empty room, shutting the blinds.
"Stay with me, Mia," I murmured, grabbing scissors to cut open her scrubs. The bullet wound was in her chest, and there was no exit wound.
"Teddy?" she mumbled weakly.
"It's Owen. Teddy's safe, but you need to hold on, or she'll kill me for letting anything happen to you."
I worked quickly, but Mia was slipping away. Just then, the door burst open, and Callie rushed in.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, startled.
"Is she alive?" Callie demanded.
"Barely. She was awake a minute ago, but now—" I trailed off, my fear growing.
Callie grasped Mia's hand, her voice thick with emotion. "Come on, Mia. Just hold on a little longer. I need you."
We fought to stabilize her, but it was an uphill battle. After what felt like forever, the S.W.A.T. team arrived. They helped us get Mia out, and as soon as we stepped outside, Teddy and Arizona ran to us. Arizona collapsed into Callie's arms, while Teddy turned to me with desperate eyes.
"Is she okay?" Teddy whispered.
I took her hands in mine. "She will be. I promise."
Teddy nodded, barely holding herself together. "I'm going to Seattle Pres with her. Stay here and take care of everyone else," I instructed before climbing into the ambulance.
Teddy's POV
As Owen left, I waited anxiously with Arizona and Callie. I kept scanning for Meredith or Cristina, needing to see them safe. Finally, I spotted them with Jackson and April, wheeling Derek out on a gurney.
Meredith locked eyes with me. "Where's Mia?"
Cristina turned sharply. "Where's Owen?"
"Owen is with Mia. She was shot. She's at Seattle Pres," I admitted.
Meredith's face crumbled, tears filling her eyes. "Both my husband and sister were shot. They could die."
Cristina pulled her into a tight hug. "We're going to Seattle Pres. Now."
I nodded, leading them to my car.
At Seattle Pres, I paced in the waiting room until Owen finally emerged. "Is Mia okay?" I asked breathlessly.
"We got the bullet out. She's going to be fine."
Relief crashed over me, and I pulled Owen into a hug. "Thank you."
"You want to see her?" Owen asked, and I nodded quickly.
As we walked to Mia's room, I texted Meredith, but she didn't reply—probably with Derek. When we reached the room, my heart clenched at the sight of Mia, fragile and hooked up to machines. I rushed to her side, taking her hand.
"They found the shooter," I whispered.
Owen nodded. "It's over."
"I was scared to leave her," I admitted, tears spilling. "Not because I thought she'd die... but because I thought the shooter would come back and kill you both. I was scared to lose you too."
Owen put an arm around me, and I rested my head on his shoulder. "You're both safe now," he assured me.
"Can I have some time alone with her?" I asked, and Owen nodded before leaving.
I brushed Mia's hair gently, kissing her forehead. "I told Owen about us," I murmured. "Because I really like you. You're so beautiful and kind and—"
A knock interrupted me, and Callie stepped in. "Can I come in, or is this a bad time?"
"It's fine."
Callie sat on the other side of Mia's bed. "Last time Mia was in a hospital bed like this... she almost died. But she survived. She'll make it through this too."
"Take care of her, Teddy. She's my person," Callie said firmly.
"I promise I will."
Before I could say more, Mia's fingers twitched. "Mia?" I gasped, watching her eyelids flutter open.
"She's waking up!" Callie ran to get a doctor while I grasped Mia's hand.
Mia's eyes landed on me, and she smiled weakly. "You look beautiful."
Tears filled my eyes as I squeezed her hand. "And you're the strongest person I know."
She was back. And I wasn't letting her go.
