18: Turning

ANDREA'S POV

I dumped my bag on the sofa in the common room, Raf and Kaleb were with me. "I'm going to go shower," I say brushing more monster guts off me. "Yeah, you look gross." "That's what being the bait gets you," I say shoving Kaleb. He chuckled before pecking my lips regardless of my gross state. "I'll see you back in Ric's office?" I asked him and he nodded. 

I went to my room and grabbed my wash bag before heading for the showers. Being the only one of the super squad without any real supernatural ability sucked sometimes. I was always covered in something. My brother would freak if he knew I was almost cyclopses breakfast today.  He hated that I played any part in this. But he has football to help him cope with our losses in life. I thrive on the thrill of looking death in the face and laughing at it. We win always, and it's a good way to get back at death for ripping my parents from me, in front of me. When I was a helpless girl. 

Aiden doesn't get it, he thinks I'm being stupid with my life but why shouldn't I be. I have a second shot at life if this one goes wrong. And it's for a good cause. We don't have a family but this school has become mine and Dad said we fight for our family always and forever and I'm fighting for them to protect them. Malivore just won't give up but nor will I. 

I washed the purple guts out of my hair before going back to my room to change, the halls were pretty empty most people would already be asleep by now, it was pretty late. I change quickly and go down to the office to meet the boys. I felt so much better now I was all clean again. I always felt on cloud nine after defeating a monster knowing the town and school was safe for a little while longer. My entire life I've been the one others had looked after, by my parents, my brother my friends. Even random people at the school because I'm younger, or smaller than them and it felt good to do the looking after. 

I walked into the office without knocking, we always came here to give Ric a rundown on what happened and assure him all of us are alive and thriving without any permanent injuries. "Sup, losers," I say with a smile on my face. I scanned the room and no one was smiling. "What?" I asked confused. "Has another monster raided the town already? Let me go grab my stuff. What is it this time? You know Camille is so clued up on all these monsters we should really start going to her more." I rambled on turning to leave to grab my bag. "Andi, listen," Kaleb said in his serious voice. "What?" I asked looking at him with a confused face. "We need to get going if-"It's your brother." "My brother?" I questioned confused. "Andrea why don't you take a seat." I backed up from the three of them. "My brother is fine," I tell them. I spoke to him this morning. He was fine. He was being annoying, telling me not to go after the monster he saw charge around the school but he was alive and fine. 

"There was a fire." "What?" "At his apartment building there was a fire and your brother went back inside to help a mother and children." "Are they okay?" "The family is fine." "Okay good, then what's the problem." "Andi..." "I don't like it when you say my name like that. Why do you say it with so much pity." I say to my boyfriend. His eyes softened. "Your brother got trapped under a falling beam." "No." "Andrea, I'm sorry." "He would have healed," I tell Raf firmly. That's what our blood does. It heals us. So we can't get hurt or die. "He died Andrea." "No. That's not how we work. We heal. We don't die because we get caught in a stupid fire!"  I said angrily at Ric. He didn't know what he was talking about. Aiden probably did this to prove to me we're not invincible and to convince me to stop going after these monsters. But I won't believe it. It's impossible. 

"We've not been able to locate his body yet... We don't know where he is." "Bodies don't just go missing." "He's been taken to a morgue." "But he's not dead! We don't die! It's the only perk of being a linear is you get two lives!" I pulled at my hair overwhelmed by the news I was just given.
