Teaching her stealth was no issue at all. Due to her docile personality, she was naturally quiet. Sometimes she was too quiet. However, she did have a major problem of not thinking before acting.
Kane spotted a small black bear on the edge of an opening in the forest. The bear sat in his berry bushes, content and unaware of Kane presence. Kane was unaware of Lori’s presence until he heard a soft, yet vicious growl. Unfortunately, the bear heard it too. The bear perked his head, looking for the source of the growl. Kane quickly nipped Lori in the shoulder as a warning to shut up.
Not seeing a mother bear in sight, Kane began to creep out of the woods, keeping his belly close to the ground. His fur blended in perfectly with the tall grass surrounding him. Lori began to follow him in the same pattern. Her golden fur matched the grass even better. Her small frame helped her stay lower to the ground. However, her stomach that caused the grass to separate was more noticeable.
Kane stopped halfway through the field. He contemplated on how to tell her to not follow him. They needed to ambush the small bear from opposite sides. He turned to her barring his teeth. She backed a few steps in fear and Kane silently rushed behind her, stopping her from moving back any farther. She stepped forward and Kane growled, nipping her in the hip.
She instantly rolled over revealing her stomach. He mentally sighed at the miscommunication. She needed to learn body language in order to survive the next three days. He took a quick whiff of her rear end then pushed her over. He didn’t have time to go through the entire acceptance of submission with her. Their prey was going to get away.
He looked back at the bear. It went back to picking at its berries. With no mother bear still in sight, he assumed it must have just left the nest. He pushed Lori’s butt straight up in the air as a sign to move forward. Once she started stalking again, he crept in the other direction. She never noticed he wasn’t behind her until she saw him in front of her across the field.
There was no time to waste once Lori stepped down wind. The bear caught her scent immediately. Kane purposely stomped on a stick to direct the bear’s entire body toward him. With a running leap Kane grabbed the bear’s throat. Lori came running up behind only to get the bear’s thigh.
Kane ignored Lori’s failed attempt. He swung wildly as the bear tried to claw him off. It was Kane’s overly thick fur and skin that protected him from the bear’s teeth and claws.
Lori tugged and pulled, making use of her failed aim, and ripped the bear’s hamstring. The bear came down and Kane quickly got out of the way. Lori pounced again, this time landing on the bear, and getting its rear. Kane jumped on the front attacking to the bear’s head. The only noise to be heard for miles was Kane and Lori’s vicious growls and the bear’s loud woman-like screams.
Lori retreated when her ears couldn’t take the high pitched sounds any longer. Kane, however, stuck to his attack. He was hungry and not about to give up. The two hundred pound bear was easily enough to feed him, Lori, and his brother’s. Marcus might even be able to get Veronica to shift for that meal.
The bear’s screams quickly died due to shock and blood loss. Kane successfully made the kill. He howled for Lori to come back before digging in. Lori returned cautiously and Kane ignored her nervousness. She moved toward him and he snapped at her. He was to eat first while she kept guard.
Kane met his full and nudged Lori toward the food. He sat in front of the bear, serenely cleaning himself as she engorged herself on the bear’s internal organs. Kane saved her the easiest and best part.
Once Lori was finished she came to rest next to Kane. With one glance at her, Kane snorted. There was no need for her to eat that messy and fast. He was on guard; nothing was going to steal her food. He pinned her neck down and started cleaning the top of her head, working his way down her muzzle.
