Children - Mason and Jasmine
The field seemed to be alive as it gently swayed back and forth to the music of the wind rustling through the leaves of the nearby forest. The high noon sun shone over the field giving it it’s golden color. The tip of a small white tail, slightly blended in. The clouds danced across the sky, creating beautiful pictures against it’s clear blue canvas. A low playful growl drowned out the wind’s music. Birds chirped and sang to the joys of spring, life was in the air. So was the underside of a furry sliver belly. Crickets played the strings as my mate’s growl played the bass line. The rain drops left over from the recent storm, glistened like diamonds hanging from blades of grass. The birds took flight, their wings making shadows across the once serene field. A high pitched, screechy howl was responsible for the disturbance. The pastel colors of a rainbow lead to a mysterious pot of gold somewhere. Soft whimpers beside me told me nobody from my family was going to find it. This was considered a typical and peaceful family outing.
My mates big silver paws were full, full of our children’s necks as he pinned them face first to the ground. I told him we should have gotten a babysitter. Oh well, it was my birthday meaning it was my day of peace. Thank goodness for the motherly abilities of selective hearing. I went back to cleaning the water and muck from my paws, trying to cover up the pink skin that was showing and make them white again. At least the mud and dirt blended in with my brown. Why couldn’t we have gone out to dinner and a movie?
My mate’s slivery-blue eyes looked at me with sympathy and sorrow, causing my heart to drown in guilt. He meant for this to be the best birthday for me. He means to give me that every year. The dirt a few feet away began to move and rise up. Small chunks of earth and pebbles scattered around. Light brown puppy eyes poked through the mud ball. My timid little brown cub made his way out of his little puppy made hiding hole and to my side. He managed to weasel his way under my hip and to the white spot on my side that I just finished cleaning. I stood up with a huff and stormed back to the house to take a real shower.
“Jasmine, I’m sorry. I lectured the boys all morning to behave,” Mason, my mate whined. The boys were hiding under the bed all morning from the storm, I should know, I was the one who was trying to get them out.
“I’m in the shower,” I grumbled irritated with the day’s events.
The shower curtain flew open and his smiling face peaked around, “your point.”
“Get a babysitter,” I yanked the curtain back close.
“Eww, mom and dad are going to do the nasty,” my oldest yelled.
“What’s the nasty,” my middle child, Kyle asked.
“It’s when a mommy and a daddy,” my oldest started.
“Derrick, if you tell your brother about the birds and the bees I’m going to strangle you!” I interrupted.
“What does the birds and the bees have to do with sex?” Derrick asked from inside the bathroom.
“What sex,” my youngest, Blake asked.
“Derrick!” I shouted at the top of my lungs.
“Ask dad,” Derrick shouted. Heavy footsteps fled up the stairs that ran above the shower.
“It’s when two people find their mates and,” Mason started.
“Mason, if you tell my three and six year old about sex, I will murder you. It’s bad enough our eight year old knows.”
“Well now a days with the way kids are, it’s better to be safe than sorry,” Mason started.
“They’re three, six and eight!”
