The time had come, Damien and the other Alphas followed through with their plan. I stood by my best friend, Ivan, as his mother’s side was being tossed into cages like animals. The irony was they were being tossed in by animals. I stood there because it was also my mate’s family. Up until now, his mother’s side was left unaware of us, including his cousin.
As kids, Heather and I built an inseparable relationship. That was until I went to her house one day and everything, but a ‘For Sale’ sign in the front yard was gone. Her dad got a job offer in a different city. They moved without notice. For years, I would mope around until the holidays. Every Christmas, I would get the best present possible; my mate would come back to visit. However, that came to end when I learned she found someone else. She began going to his family’s house for holidays. I prayed every night they would break up, but instead, they got married. Life was never the same after that.
The second we found her house, I dragged her in a bedroom and changed her. I hated seeing the fear in her eyes as my wolf form bit into her. I shouldn’t have been near her in my wolf form to begin with. I had no control, but it truly was an accident. I didn’t know it was her house until I smelled her from outside. Her scent was intoxicating and took me by surprise. I had to claim her. It was a good thing her husband wasn‘t there. I never met him, but I hated him with a passion. He stole my mate.
She sat amongst the pack by my best friend, too scared to change back. She was muzzled and chained; she looked like a helpless little pure white fluff ball. We couldn’t take any chances though, she was scared and unpredictable. She was small, but her teeth and claws could be lethal to humans.
She intensely stared her family with agony in her big blue eyes. Her body shook so bad in fear the shaking traveled through to her hind legs and into her paws. I knelt down in front of her, blocking her view and scratching her side. She moved her head so she could watch her family. “Angel, you’re breaking my heart,” I whined and then looked up at my best friend.
He sighed, approaching his family’s cage. Placing his hand on the lock he spoke with uncertainty, “I’m ready when you are.”
Not being able to take anymore, I undid her leash. She ran towards her family and my best friend opened the door at the last second, allowing her to barrel in. Everyone inside the cage backed up in fear. She lied on the floor whimpering with her head in her paws. “What did you expect Heather, for them to rub your tummy?” Ivan chuckled.
“Heather?” Her father asked being the first to step forward.
She jumped up and then went down on her front paws, yipping through her muzzle in play mode. “Wow, you’re a vicious little thing,” Ivan sneered sarcastically.
“Ivan, cut her a break, she’s just a pup,” I said lovingly showing up beside the cage. I was happy to see her happy.
“Heather?” A man around our age asked stepping through the crowd with a small child hugging his leg.
Heather stood up tall and with a playful wag of her tail. As her front paws left the ground, I shifted in midair going towards her with one thing in my mind, mine. I flew between them, knocking her out of the way. She rolled under me, destroying her white coat across the muddy ground. Everything moved too fast for the human eye to see, the only thing they would have heard was her loud, quick whimper of shock. I stood above her protectively, baring my teeth at the man. I pushed her over onto her stomach and grabbed her by the scruff of the neck, carrying her off to a corner. Lying beside her, I placed a leg over her neck to pin her down.
