I watched as Lady slept so peacefully on my chest, lost in my own thoughts. The night had passed brutally slowly and the sun was now rising from just outside her window. Still this beautiful mate of mine slept on. I knew the release of that much energy had exhausted her. I knew, without a doubt, that even when she woke she wouldn't have as much energy as she normally would. I also knew that tomorrow was the day of our "big race". Truth be told, I only cared about the novelty of it. I'd long since gotten passed my curiosity of what she was. I knew the things that were important to know anyways and it really wasn't all that hard to guess the rest.
Sure I didn’t know what she was exactly but I knew what she was capable of and more importantly, I knew who she was to my people. Regardless of what she was aside from the royalty among my kind, she was now and always would be my mate. The race was just that a race. I knew if I asked her to tell me everything she would, but I didn’t want it to be that simple. I wanted to earn it from her. This wasn’t some small secret that had no purpose, this was something she’d kept from most people all of her life.
More than knowing what she was though, I wanted to know the thing she was keeping from everyone. The thing she wouldn’t say a word about until the time was right to do so. Even as her mate I knew that it was the one thing I could ask her about that she wouldn’t say a single word of. Whatever this secret she was keeping was I knew it was big, that it would change everything in our lives. If it wasn’t then she wouldn’t be guarding it so closely and the demons wouldn’t be hunting her down for the answers. They’d been eerily quiet lately too, in fact since Lady and Liam had done whatever they’d left to do, the barrier had been left alone and they seemed to have disappeared. In all honesty though, we really didn’t know much about them to begin with. It was a subject that only Lady could educate us on and I knew she would.
Before any of that though she needed Greg’s training to gain control over her abilities. If yesterday had been any indication it was working. That pile of ash had very clearly once been a tree and I wasn’t completely sure how she’d managed to turn it into a pile of ash. The only thing I was sure of was that she’d vented all her overloaded energy into that tree and that was the final result. Her hands had been burnt still but at least it had been contained to her hands. It wasn’t like before when her whole body had been the victim.
Still I hated how she’d been hurt at all, how she always seemed to be the one who ended up in pain. Even if it was by her own abilities, or doing, it was still hard as her mate to sit by and know that she was hurting. She and I had managed to come such a long way in such a short amount of time. I’d managed to work my way into her heart when just weeks ago she’d vowed to hate me. Of course I’d been making every effort to keep myself from overreacting but she’d been making changes as well. She’d accepted that the bond between us was strong and that she needed me to be a part of her life. The fact that she’d whispered to me just last night that she thought she was falling in love with me was just an added bonus. Sure by marking her she became mine, she’d be the only girl I’d ever be with and the same would be for her, but that didn’t prove that I would own her heart. Being told that she may be falling in love with me gave me hope that I’d truly find happiness with her.
I laughed softly at the reminder of how I’d blown that whole tree down as though it were nothing. The slight shake of my chest caused Lady to begin to stir on my chest as her soft sigh gave proof that she was beginning to wake. My hand lifted of its own accord to brush the soft strands of her silky brown hair from her face as I watched patiently for her vivid green eyes to open. The twitch of her lashes told me that it wouldn’t be long.
“Mmm… you stayed?” She said in her soft sleep filled voice before she’d managed to even open her eyes.
“Where else would I be?” I replied.
