She'd gone and turned wolf and I was a fool to have not noticed the changes happening with her. My father had been right. As her mate I should have been able to tell before anyone else could. Yet I'd remained oblivious to the things I should have been aware of. It was once again another situation that reminded me that I was failing to think about others.
I was completely thrilled and yet the surprise was unmatched to anything that I had felt before. I felt guilty too that I hadn’t been observant enough to be able to help her through the first shift. It was always painful the first few times well the human body became accustomed to the changes in it. All I’d done as she’d gone through that agonized torture was stand there and just watch in horror as it happened. I wanted, no needed, to know that she was okay now. Part of me was terrified that she wasn’t and that she might even run from everything that is going on at the moment. When I put myself in her shoes I wouldn’t blame her for feeling that way. She came here for a reason and yet now it was known and expected of her to change who she is and how she’d lived up to this point. We, the wolves of this pack, got to sit back and continue living our lives as we always have.
It seemed that life was throwing all sorts of curveballs into our relationship. But the bigger issue was my repetitive actions in making similar mistakes. I just couldn’t seem to stop myself from being possessive of her, or trying to control her, or drill it into her of what was expected. It wasn’t fair to her that I was being like that either and yet I couldn’t seem to be able to stop myself. Being raised as an only child, well until Layla came along, I did in fact have a selfish streak in me.
Despite all of what was going on I could hardly be any happier than I was to find out that my mate was a true wolf. My father had been right. She was the biggest that I had ever seen and from his comment alone I knew it was due to the Royal blood inside of her. She was glorious though. Her fur was long with a slight wave through it. Her eyes were sky blue and yet so very light they appeared almost white. They were unlike any that I had ever seen on a wolf before. She looked magnificent standing there and testing her new legs out. And even more so when the growl, that I was growing used to hearing from my human mate, came out far more wolfish with her jowls pulled back and her teeth barred to me. She was no longer a meekly defenceless human who only had magic to depend on. As far as the pack new she was still human and yet her select few knew she had a secret weapon they all remained clueless to.
Now training her would have to be a lot more thorough. We not only needed to find a way to teach her control over her magic, but we also need to teach her how to fight like a wolf. She needed to learn how to defend herself and the pack. She needed to know everything that she was capable of. Not for the first time I felt immeasurable pride that she was my mate. That the fates had decided to mate her to me. I once again learnt something new about her that screamed she would be a strong Alpha. That she would be a great leader and always take care and have the resources and abilities to protect the pack.
Lady was special to us. Not many of us knew it and she still kept her secrets from us, but in the end she was still special. She was something so rare that none of us could have really imagined anyone with such power within them. My mate was not only wolf but half mage. She alone could likely cause mass amount of destruction but her soul was good and I knew she could never intentionally harm anyone. What she does with her power was done in self-defence.
My father was driving back to the house. He’d remained silent since Lady had turned on her paws and run for the forest. I knew that he wasn’t the least bit surprised that she had shifted, that she’d been thrown clean into our world. He wasn’t surprised that she had proven just how completely she belonged in our pack. My father had exuded the same pride that I had felt over her wolf self, making its grand entrance. But his eyes had shown with disappointment when he’d looked at me and I could still feel his disappointment as he drove along quietly. Liam and Greg were just as quiet sitting in the back of the car. The whole atmosphere tense with the knowledge of what had just happened.
