Chapter Thirty Seven

My stomach flew up into my throat at those words. Despite how I tried to brush it off for Lady’s benefit, I actually feared this man, and only he had the power to forbid us from being together. He had the authority to change everything about the way that every wolf in this town lived. To top it off he had the power to take his position back as Alpha and I wasn’t so sure that would go over well with my father, even if they had been good friends when they were children. I had wanted to defend Lady the way I always did when I noticed that her father had stormed in here in an episode of anger, but I couldn’t. I feared this man and to go against him was to commit treason, even if he was not technically a member of my pack. He was royalty after all.

My eyes shifted from his out of instinct and lowered in a show of submission. It wasn’t likely to help him get past this current bout of anger, but it would show him that I respected the authority that he possessed. He’d have to kill me to keep me from his daughter though. There was no way I would willingly stay away from her, even if it was an order from him saying I had no choice. Fates knew that I would kidnap Lady and flee this town with her if it meant that I could keep her forever. I cared for her that much, I loved her that much.

I mentally groaned with the knowledge that I’d just come across. I had never really stopped to think of whether it was love or not that I was feeling. It hit me like a tidal wave that I did in fact love her already. I knew that I would but I never thought that it would happen this soon. I never thought that it would make me feel so incredibly sick with the thought that I could in fact lose her forever.

I felt the change in the energy that she was giving off. Unlike me, she didn’t fear what this man could do to change our lives. She was only angered at the fact that he waltzed in here thinking that he was top dog and demanded answer to questions that he had no right to ask. Expecting answers that she didn’t feel she had to answer. She after all was this man’s daughter, and like him carried royal blood in her veins. She had just as much authority in her as he possessed, and she was a stubborn girl who didn’t give up the things that she wanted in her life. She was loyal to those she loved and trusted, but this situation was going to prove a true test to her. I doubted very much she completely realised it.

If her father wanted her to stay away from me then her loyalty would be divided. I knew she loved this man above anyone else that she’d ever spoke of, except maybe her aunt, but the bond between mates was almost unbreakable too. If her father forbade her from being with me then her loyalty would be divided and no one would end up more hurt from it then she would. The last thing I wanted was for her to get hurt. I had to do anything that I possibly could do to keep that from happening. And if it meant that I had to work my ass off to get her father’s approval then that’s exactly what I would do.

“Now wait just a minute.” Lady snapped at him as she shifted to slightly trying to place herself in front of me. Of course I didn’t let her do that. It wasn’t her job to protect me; it was mine to protect her. “You have no right to come in here and blow up over something that’s out of your control. The fates decided for us to be mated and who the hell are you to come in here and get upset over it?”

I mentally cringed at her words. She was provoking him without even knowing she was doing so. She was testing his authority on the matter and it wasn’t going to end well if she kept it up.

“Does the pup not have any means of defending himself?” Her father bit out in his anger. “Can he not stand up to your father? Can he not be a man worthy of being your mate?”

The growl was unmistakable as it tore free from her throat. Both Greg and I looked at her unbelieving in what we just heard. This growl had been nothing like any other that we’d heard from her before. This one had been pure animalistic and the others had been somewhat human. Not for the first time I began to question on if she was actually a wolf. I could hear her heart thundering the blood through her. I could smell the magic that began to scent the air around her. I could feel the current of electricity running from her hand to mine.
