I was feeling nervous for her. Hell I was even nervous for myself. Whatever she was preparing to say to the pack as a whole wasn't something I knew anything about. She’d had many secrets since she came to this town. There was a lot about her that she’d never shared with anyone before this pack. Things she kept hidden deep inside of herself. Even when she made her decision to share small pieces of it with us I could tell that she was nervous about any reactions.
I watched as she paced back and forth across the kitchen, her mind at work trying to put together the words that she needed to say to the pack. She was doing the best that she could do in trying to think of the right way to say the things that she needed to say. This was probably the most important secret she had. The one thing she’d guarded with her life for the last few years. I knew this was the reason the Demons were after her, why they were stalking the barrier to our town, why they were not far from breaking it down and getting in. Not just the odd few that had made it through already, but all of them, everything would be able to get through the barrier by the time all of this was through. Our town would be open to all things good or evil.
“Oh god… I don’t know if I can do this Colt.” Lacey sighed out as she came to stand beside me. “They’re going to think I’m crazy, you’re all going to think I’m crazy.”
“That’s not true Lacey. You know it’s not. We all can do things others can’t do. We all have hidden talents or secrets no one else knows about, and we all feel that the world is going to see us as crazy sometimes.” I said as I reached over to take her hand squeezing it softly in comfort.
“That’s easy for you to say now. But Colt the things I have to say and share with you all will change your lives forever. It will change everything about the way you live now, how long you live, how things work with mates and so on. You don’t get just how much everything is going to change the minute the words leave my mouth. Not everyone is going to welcome the changes either. There are a lot of pack members who want to cling to the way that things were, or are right now. But after today, or tomorrow, everything will be different. There will be no going back, no reversing of what happens today. Even if it is for the best, even if it will only make this pack and town stronger, not everyone is going to welcome or even like the changes.” She ranted out as she began her pacing once again.
“Relax Lacey.” Greg ushered out. “Just let yourself relax. You are the law here; you are the highest member of this pack. Even if they don’t agree with it, they will not rebel against it. They will not speak ill of any of it. Even if they depend on the ways of the pack now they are all aware that we need to move forward into the future. We need to upgrade with the times in a manner of speaking. Me personally, I hated change before you came here. But now, months later, having gotten to know you and everything that goes with you, I would follow you anywhere, and side with you on anything.”
“It will all be just the way it’s meant to be. You wanted this pack to respect and trust in you. Well its time that you have more faith in the pack and your place among them. You need to give them the same trust and respect that you expect from them.” Erica stated as she sat with Jared perched on her lap.
The site of the two of them alone was reminder of yet another argument that Lacey and I almost had. The fact that I’d almost freaked out over her wanting to take that little boy under her wing only to find out that he was in fact a part of her family was a wakeup call. I’d gotten mad over Layla’s child too, who is also another member to Lacey’s family. Sure I’d come to accept that I would have to except responsibility of that child. I’d been prepared to do so and was thrilled that Lacey was too when I’d thought the child was mine. Then I’d completely flipped when it was declared that it wasn’t. Yet I couldn’t stop myself from getting angry with her decision. I couldn’t stop from being furious that she wanted to raise a child that want mine. Now, when I stopped to think about it, I was only worried we wouldn’t be able to handle the added stress. She’d made valid points though. We would have our families and the pack behind us to help. It wasn’t like we would be doing it all on our own.
