Chapter 11

Return of the King

The peaches were in season now and most of the males were gathering for the females. Wukong, being the king, would climb to the highest trees and pick the fruit from up there. He looked around at the females that followed him around. The majority either had infants clinging to their backs or they were still pregnant. Which also meant he had his job to do. Protecting the troop females while the other males harvest the peaches.

He landed back on the ground and held out peaches to the females who were hungry as they waited. The higher peaches tasted the sweetest. Luckily for them, there wasn't much to challenge him on the island and they were always safe. The flaming mountains created a barrier that kept most everyone out. No one challenged Princess Iron Fan without getting burned.

He felt a soft nose against his arm. He looked down to see one of the bolder infants sniffing him. He chuckled letting him. It was their way of getting to know him. It was a very young female a few days old. Wukong leaned down and sniffed her in return. The females giggled at their king's playfulness to the infants.

Little Macaques can start wandering around pretty soon. Even stand on its own legs. But it still depended on mothers milk so it stayed close. A few males returned gathering their mates and wandered off telling their king there was a storm coming and the other males would return soon. How odd...a storm this time of year. Mostly it was just a bit of rain. He ushered the females into a nearby cave to keep the infants safe and dry.

"One...two..." He counted three more mothers, and two children. The third one was still heavy. She leaned heavily against a rock and chewed the peach. Wukong walked over and leaned forward. "Soon...?" He whispered to her. She smiled at him and nodded. It was her first and he had always helped them along during labor. The female yawned, and jumped when there was a loud boom. He jumped and looked down at the female who looked down at the ground and then threw the peach and just leaned back again. Her water had broken...apparently she wanted to at least finish the peach before that happened, yet it happened and they were on their own. The other two females saw what happened and almost instantly pushed Wukong toward the opening of the cave. This was female business now and he wasn't allowed inside. That was fine, he'd sit outside...in the rain...that was great.

Three more males showed up and sat with him. The new father waited nervously tapping his tail, accidentally bumping Wukongs and jumped.

"Its alright, its not unusual to feel nervous like this."

"You don't have any though, why haven't you had any children?" the voice came from above them. Wukong looked up to see Nezha.

"Never found the right mate. I guess thats why the Buddivistha had to find me a successor. I'm....slow about that." he chuckled hearing the cry down below. "Ah, there we go..." He used his tail to pick up the new father and helped him down. "Perhaps someday...but...I've been watching the kid, he's doing good."

"Good? Don't you know? The former Tripitaka has been receiving death threats, someones tried to poison him, and..."

Guanyin appeared before them. The fear on her face was palpable.

"Hurry Wukong! Your successor is in trouble! Go before all is lost!"

Wukong growled taking to the sky, his cloud going as fast as he dared go.

The plume of smoke caused his eyes to water. Fire wouldn't kill him, but the smoke would and can still affect him.

Crashing through the roof and looking around through the smoke.

"Master!" He called out looking back and forth trying to see through the fire and smoke.

"Big Brother..." He saw Pigsy through the smoke. He had an infant in his arms, and Tang on his back. "Help them." He looked as if he were about to drop.

Wukong ran forward picking up Pigsy and pushed back through the roof. Landing on the grass in the backyard.

"It's alright...come on..." He picked up his Master, laying him in the ground. Tang coughed up the soot and smoke, same as Pigsy, but it would seem Xiaotian wasn't moving at all.

Wukong pulled the infant from Pigsy's arms. Pigsy protested loudly.

"Not a...toy..." He growled and just lay there on his side. Coughing up more soot.

"Oh come on Pigsy, I'm not going to hurt him." He lay the kid down and put his ear to his chest. Much to Wukongs surprise there was a small pinch from his hair.

"Hey..." Wukong was used to having his fur pulled. Most infants clung to their parents.

"What the...?" Pigsy chuckled looking down at Tang as he curled up on the grass.

"Wukong? How did you know?" Tang coughed up more soot and watched his son feel Wukongs fur.

"The goddess told me." He admitted. He didn't like to lie to his master unless he really really had to.

"She's the one who gave him to us."

"He's got a very heavy future ahead of him." Wukong admitted pulling MK from his head and deposited him onto the grass. "My successor. One day he'll pick up my staff and make his way to the flower fruit mountain." Wukong watched Xiaotian walk a few steps and fall forward onto his front and then look down at the grass like it's the thing that tripped him.

Wukong sniffed the air and looked around. The scent that wafted toward them was someone new, and close by. He smelled like fire, and hay. "That's not you..." He looked at MK and set down the phone. "Call for assistance. I have...something to do." He turned toward the woods. Someone started this fire, and he was going to find out who.
