Scarlett was preparing to assist Daisy with dinner, eager for a break from her homework, when the sudden chime of the doorbell interrupted her. As she opened the door, disbelief washed over her at the sight before her.
"Mum!? What are you doing here?" she exclaimed, astonished.
"I think the real question is, what are you doing here?" Debby replied, her tone a mixture of concern and frustration. "I drove all the way from New York. I called the school to inquire about your whereabouts, and they informed me that classes had just ended. Then I just decided to go to the school just as I saw you getting into a car with someone."
"So, you followed us?" Scarlett concluded, her brow furrowing in realization. Debby ignored her question, stepping into the house with a determined air. "Who are these people? Whose house is this?" she demanded, her eyes scanning the unfamiliar surroundings.
She started to get Greyson's headaches every time she asks questions. But hey, like mother like daughter. "Okay, Mum. I'll explain everything later." she said, attempting to ease the tension.
"Sleepover, huh?" Debby chastised, her voice laced with disappointment as Scarlett rolled her eyes in response. "I'm sorry for lying, but I couldn't tell you at the time." Scarlett explained earnestly. "I promise I was going to— I swear. It would have been too much for you to handle."
"Trust me." her mother sighed. "I can handle anything."
"Ah, Mrs. Parker. It's a pleasure to see you here." Greyson greeted, cutting off any opportunity for her to respond. " 'Nice to meet you'?" Scarlett echoed, her confusion evident as she pieced together the situation. "How could you know she was coming if she followed us to the house?"
"I noticed a car following us, so I called her." Greyson explained. "I also thought it would be the right time to discuss your new world." "Wait, that doesn't make any sense. When exactly did you call her?" Scarlett pressed, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Ugh, must I explain everything to you?" Greyson groaned, exasperation creeping into his voice.
"Yes." she replied flatly, her expression unwavering.
"When we pulled over, I called her to come to our house, providing her with the address. I noticed she was your mother; you two share similar features." Greyson explained, his tone nonchalant.
"And how did you know her number?" Scarlett asked, curiosity laced with skepticism.
"I mind linked—" he abruptly stopped, contemplating his words. However, he resolved to continue; this had been his plan all along: to help Debby understand everything. "I mind linked with some guys to get her number."
"I'm sorry, what? New world? Mind link?" Debby echoed, her voice laced with confusion as she struggled to grasp the implications of his words. "Yup. Follow me." Greyson instructed, leading them into his office. Without hesitation or consideration for the emotional toll it might take on Debby, he began to explain Scarlett's recent whereabouts over the past few weeks, detailing who he was, where he lived, and the people he shared his life with.
It was safe to say that Debby was both shocked and speechless. A whirlwind of emotions coursed through her; she felt a sense of relief knowing that her daughter was finally aware of this hidden world, especially given that her father had been part of it since birth. The moment also struck her as an opportune time to share the truth about Scarlett's father and the reasons behind their divorce.
Scarlett observed her mother's expression, noting the stark contrast to the emotional turmoil that had enveloped them moments before. Her mother was not acting as Scarlett had expected; there was no bewilderment, fear, or any of the emotions one might anticipate in such a situation.
