Chapter 14 - Saying Goodbye

It was Thursday evening, June 5th. Hermione, Severus, and Astoria were in the hospital wing celebrating Draco's birthday. Astoria made him a cake and even set up small decorations around his bed.  Draco was sitting up in bed smiling, he only seems to smile around them. Once everything calmed down he frowned, "Ok... so... the plan. The next 25 days are gonna be hard. Especially for you." He looks at Hermione. 

"I know..." Hermione frowns.

Astoria starts to get teary, "This whole thing sucks."

Draco held her hand, "I know... I'm sorry you and Hermione got dragged into this mess."

Hermione shook her head and held Severus's hand, "I'm not. So, what time is everything happening?"

Severus clears his throat, "Well, Dumbledore will be taking Potter out on a horcrux hunt that day. I will be waiting at the bottom of the Astronomy tower waiting for them to return. While they are gone, Draco will let the others in through the room of requirements. He then will tell them to wait for the popping sound then he will head to the astronomy tower and meet me. Once he meets up with me, he will wait for the loud popping sound, that will be them returning. He then will make his way up. Dumbledore will probably make Harry hide below, I will come up behind Harry and make him wait there. Giving him a false hope that I am there to help. Once that happens, I will walk up and give Draco the go... and then he does his task."

Astoria nods, "I'll be with him?"

"You will to let the others in, but you'll stay with others until they join Draco in the Astronomy tower."

"Ok."

Hermione frowns, "I'll wait in the library, I can see the top of the astronomy tower from there."

Severus nods, "That works, but this is where your job gets hard Hermione. After tonight, you can't have any contact with any of us. They'll suspect you."

Hermione's eyes starts to tear up, "I understand that..."

Hermione looks at her new friends and husband, not knowing when she will see them again, she cant help it and hugs Astoria who has also started crying. Astoria whispers, "Don't worry. We will see each other again. You're my best friend."

Hermione pulls away and smiles then looks at Draco who already had his arms open. Hermione hugs him and he sighs, "Don't you worry Hermione. Everything will work out fine in the end."

Hermione pulls away and nods, "You're so confident. I wish I was like you."

Severus pulls Hermione into a hug, "You are confident. You could have easily just accepted the obliviate, and none of this would be your problem. But you stood up and said 'I'm in'. And I'm glad you did. Otherwise, I wouldn't have such an amazing wife right now."

Hermione starts crying into his chest. Astoria held Draco's hand and cried at the scene. Severus looks over at Draco and Astoria, "I'm gonna take her back to our room. Say our goodbyes."

Draco nods, "We understand."

Severus nods and stands up. Hermione looks back to Astoria and Draco, before running into them for one last hug. They all hug for a second before Hermione returns to Severus and walks out. They walk into the chambers and Hermione sits in their reading nook, Severus sits next to her, "We have on more chapter left, I know it's your turn to read. But may I?" Hermione nods as they cuddle. Severus begins to read the last chapter of their book. Crookshanks climbs into Hermione lap, causing her to cry again. Her last time with Crookshanks, "Promise me you'll keep him safe."

Severus looks down at the cat then puts the book down and pets him, "Of course my love. If it makes you feel better, when I'm not in the room. I'll turn him into a cup so he is kept safe."

Hermione nods, "Thar does actually make me feel better."

Severus kisses her cheek before picking the book back up and reading it again. 

Once he was finished reading the book he looked down to Hermione, seemed she feel asleep. He picks her up and carries her to bed. He slowly starts to undress her to put her into her nightgown when she wakes up and looks up at him. He looks into her eyes then looks to the ground. Hermione looks at him confused, "What's wrong?"

"I don't like thinking about how this is the last time I get to look at you for a long time."

"I know... I don't either."

He looks into her eyes, "I love you so much."

"I love you too."

"I want to grow old with you..."

Hermione's eyes start to tear up, "You do?"

He smiles at her, tear coming into his own eyes, "Yes."

Hermione smiles at him, it was the first time she'd seen him cry. Severus hugs her tightly and she hugs him back. She whispers into his ear, "Shall we make our last night memorable?"

Severus chuckles, "Are you trying to seduce me?"

"Depends, is it working?"

Severus laughs then kisses her deeply. They end up laying in the bed together, kissing each other. Hermione pulls back giggling, "I'll take that as a yes."

Severus smirks art her, "Come to me."

Hermione blushes and kisses him again.

It was the next morning. Hermione wakes up and puts her bathrobe on. She grabs her wand and waves it. Causing all of her clothes to start packing. All but her clothes for the day. Severus comes out of the restroom in his bathrobe to see her packing. He looks at her sad face and walks up to her pulling her into a hug, "A house elf can take your bags to your room, so you can stay a little longer."

"Ok." She looks up to him and they share a kiss. 

"Tea?"

"Of course."

 They have tea together and Hermione makes eggs and toast. Soon after breakfast they clean up and get dressed for the day. Hermione stands in front of the door, not wanting to open it. Severus hugs her from behind, "I will miss you my love."

Hermione turns and looks up at him already crying, "I will miss you Severus. Promise me you'll write me as soon as you get somewhere safe."

"I will my dear."

They share a kiss before Hermione leaves, not knowing when she will ever see her husband again.
