A week had gone by and David was right. I was trying to consume myself in work, but all I did was think about that night. I craved him, and it was terrible.
I even tried to remedy the ache by sleeping with Zach, but it didn't work. Like David said, nobody could make me feel this way.
Gran invited me over for lunch, so I took the rest of the day off. After leaving the office, I went straight over to her house. I pulled up to her house, but was confused when a seen a car other than hers there. She didn't drive a Mercedes.
I got out, grabbing my purse. She greeted me at the door with a warm smile, wiping her hands on her apron. "Hey baby, you're just in time. I invited the pastor and his wife over to join us"
I zoned out as soon as I heard the word pastor. I couldn't be here. His wife was here, she was so sweet, I couldn't face her after what I did with her husband. "Really? That's nice granny" I said playing it cool.
It's cool. Half-way into lunch I'll just tell her an emergency came up at the office, and I'll leave. Yea, that's it. I thought to myself, smiling.
I walked in and they were on the couch, in conversation. Ashlyn turned to me immediately. "Hello Pastor, First Lady" I said, only looking at Ashlyn. "Hi sweetheart. Oh please, call me Ashlyn" she said getting up to hug me. I hugged her back, and I felt David staring at me but I didn't dare look his way.
I didn't wait for him to respond. "Excuse me, I should go help my grandmother in the kitchen" I said and walked away.
Going into the kitchen, I saw my granny was pulling something out the oven. It smelt delicious. "Hey granny, how are you?"
"I'm good chile, how are you?"
"I'm good granny. Just a little tired"
We continued to have small talk. Twenty minutes later, the food was ready. My granny made baked chicken, mac and cheese, corn, and sweet rolls. My tastebuds watering at the smell.
She called everyone to the table and we all took a seat. David and I sitting on opposite sides of each other, while Ashlyn and Gran sat at the ends of the table.
We all held hands to say grace, Gran doing the honor. As she prayed, I felt eyes burning into my face, I opened my eyes, and caught a pair of green ones, staring at me. I quickly shut my eyes again.
That was the first time I actually looked at him since I've been here. We all said "Amen" and started to make our plates. We started to eat and have small talk. "So Emerald honey, how's work? I heard you were in marketing" Ashlyn said.
"It's great, I love my job"
"How long have you been working there?"
"Since I was 18" she nodded her head smiling. "Ms.Ruby this food is amazing" Ashlyn complimented.
"Yes, it tastes delicious" he said looking over at me. I took a sip of my lemonade and cleared my throat.
"So when are you going to bring Zach over baby?" I rolled my eyes. "Grandma Zach is not my boyfriend, we just work together"
I felt his eyes burning holes into my face again. I looked over and he had an irritated look on his face. "Mhm. I'm just ready for you to find somebody and be happy"
"Grandma I'm only 21. And I work full time, I don't have time for anybody"
"Okay. I'll leave it alone, for now"
Lunch ended and Ashlyn volunteered to help wash dishes with Grandma. "Ms.Ruby, you mind if I use your bathroom?" David asked. "Yea sure honey, Emerald show him the bathroom"
