Stanley wasn't in another dimension, he was in the future - the portal is a time machine.
this theory is based on the clothes and the weapons style of Stanley and the citizens of Gravity Falls in the year 207̃012. the clothes are in the same style, and if you saw "The Time Traveler's Pig" and "Blendin's Game" you can see that Stanley's weapon is pretty look like the weapons of the future Gravity Falls citizens, which means that there is a possibility that Stanley was in the future.
