Greta found work to stabilize her. And with that being her primary focus, she had no trouble doing a much better job in these two weeks than she did in quite a long time.
There were no distractions keeping her from veering off her path. No Eli's, no Julien's, not even any Chet's. Even Kelly and Cora kept their distance from her. Whether it was through calm and steady motions throughout the loft, or silent treatments applied in the office, Greta did all that she could to keep to herself as much as possible.
But today was going to be harder than most. Because today was Kelly's birthday. And tomorrow, she and Cora were going to go to their house to do their annual Lord of the Rings marathon in commemoration. And though less boozy than the years before, there was to be nothing but comfort, good food and laughs had as they each made up their own arguments on the missed opportunities of Frodo and Sam having some sort of whirlwind romance in the midst of their travels.
However, it was hard to reminisce on such conversations when lately, both Kelly, her wife, and her sister all had their own opinions about her plan to get back together with Julien, or the way Greta broke things off with Eli.
And knowing that it was Kelly's birthday, it was easy to assume that he'd be there. In the back of her mind, Greta only wondered all the scenarios that would take place if they were to see each other again. Would he hate her? Would he show up with another girl?
Nothing seemed remotely positive. They only filled her with grief and regret just how bad things have gotten.
"You," Kelly soon called out, nearly snapping Greta out of her train of thought until she tapped on her desk rapidly. "c'mon, you're treating me to lunch, 'cause Lulu's eaten all we had at the house."
It was the first thing she's said to her in days. And frankly, Greta was somewhat in awe. Maybe this was their chance to patch things up. She could use something good this week. Even if that meant buying her friend some birthday lunch.
And so, they made their way to the diner by the office. From Kelly's bacon-layered cheeseburger to Greta's plate full of seasoned fries and the strawberry milkshake on the side, the two sat across from each other in awkward silence. But before it could go on any longer, it was Kelly that spoke first.
"So my brother's in town, he's staying with us for a couple of days. Which means Eli's gonna come over tomorrow and cook for us." She said everything so casually as she ate away at her fries. And Greta looked to her with only confusion as though she were to take such a statement with nonchalance.
