"So how long have the two of you been going at it?"
The destination back to the loft was taken in Dana's Nissan, with Greta sitting in the passenger side. The last twenty minutes had been spent with the same prodding of questions ranging from just what it was like to actually be in a relationship after crawling out of the seven year disaster that was her ex, to what it was like dating a black guy.
But Greta traversed each and every question with nonchalance, knowing that with every minute they've spent discussing the man himself, Greta would rather be back at his place instead.
"Grets?" Dana asked to weave her friend back into the conversation.
Then she shrugged out an answer whilst looking at her phone. "Just a little into a month. It's nothing that serious."
"Well, no. I'm not asking about wedding invitations, but are you like, 'dating' dating him? Or are you 'dating but with other options at hand'?"
"It's just him, Dana..."
"See, now that sounds a little serious. Especially for you." Sounded off Holly from the backseat. "You're a serial monogamist. You tried to make it last with that lacrosse player back in high school, that guy that always got us the really good lattes, and even with Julien despite the countless times you two cheated on each other."
But Holly's analysis did little to make Greta feel at ease.
She didn't want to keep this going, but somehow, it felt like high school all over again. The three of them, along with Chelsea and Lulu - who at the time went by Rose before giving into her more flower girl, overzealous persona through college - meeting up in between and after classes, giving into their talks about life and boys and hoping that in just one of their many discussions, they'd get something worthwhile out of it.
But that was where the hard part set in. She never had to tell them about any of the other guys she'd been with in the last several months. Because even she knew that none of them were anything worth mentioning. They all never lasted past a night, no matter how much she tried to click with them. Chet just so happened to be one of the lucky few, but even when it came to Eli, he somehow was pushed out of the fray as well.
And when it came to Eli, this was still just as different. He wasn't just some Ivy League businessman, or a hipster with a manbun, or even some aspiring politician. Eli was as obscure as they'd come in her social circle. Even Greta knew that it was only a matter of time before she had to show him off to just one of them.
And worse, if they did make it past the butterfly stages of their first month, there was introducing him to her mother.
"Serial monogamist or not, I don't need to stress too hard on trying to make this one work, thank you very much." She told back to Holly. "We click just fine. There's no need for pressure."
