Mrs Tary took out her attendance file and scanned for Gabe and Trevor's names. The class was silent, the clock ticking, Gabe felt his heart racing. This moment felt like hours even though it could have probably been only a few seconds. The suspense was killing everyone in the entire class. Finally, Mrs Tary announced that she didn't know what the fuss was all about because Gabe and Trevor were clearly in class as stated in the attendance sheet.
Gabe felt a sigh of relief. Everyone scrambled back to their seats to begin their first-morning lesson. Gabe glanced at Trevor who clearly had a smug look on his face. He definitely did something but right now was not the right time to ask. Tessa on the other hand was not satisfied whatsoever. She was fuming and Gabe can't help but smile a bit himself too.
The lessons of the day flew by fast. On a normal day, Gabe would have whined and groaned for each passing second for the bell to ring.
"Did you see the way Tessa glared at us earlier today? I'm so lucky I didn't skip history for this," whispered Gabe.
"Let's lay low for a while, we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves."
The final bell for the day had rung and Gabe and Trevor decided to take a stroll down to Pleasant Park. A park not too far away from where they stayed.
"You know, this place can be kinda nice when you're not on a life or death mission," Gabe said. "You know what, I think I wanna write about this down somewhere."
"You write?"
"I was thinking of starting. Journaling! Saw some people in class doing it."
"By the way, how's your project going?"
Gabe gave Trevor a glare.
"I guess not so good then," Trevor tried diverting his eyes from Gabe to escape the awkwardness.
"How am I supposed to think about a concept to save a planet that I don't live in until a couple of weeks ago? It's not like I can say that we're some superheroes, No one is gonna believe that a-"
The motion was too fast, a giant metal claw had pinned Trevor down to the floor by the neck and was steadily pressing down on him.
Gabe was about to tackle whatever machinery had pinned Trevor down but wasn't fast enough. Another tentacle-like claw had smashed into him and flung him far away from Trevor.
Gabe was injured and in pain. His body wasn't quick enough to react to the sudden ambush. Gabe was groaning in pain. He could taste the taste of blood. "I'm probably bleeding." He thought to himself. He could feel the vibrations on his watch telling him that danger's a-foot.
"Let him go!" Gabe bellowed.
"Or what?" the machines monotone voice replied while steadily closing in the claw on Trevor's neck. "I know what you did to my friend on the boat Gabriell Montaz." the machine continued. "Do you think we won't find out?"
Trevor was gagging at this point. His face was turning blue.
"Do you really think we'll let you kill someone?!" shrieked a voice from somewhere above.
Then, out of nowhere, like lightning, there were streaks of red lines across the machine and it fell apart. Smoke began filling the air. Trevor collapsed to the ground due to his lack of oxygen. A silhouette of a woman emerged from the smoke behind the machine. She made a motion to the sky and within seconds, a figure of a man came down from somewhere above, went to Trevor and carried him away.
"Hey! What do you think you're doin-" but before Gabe could finish, a hand covered his mouth.
"Hush! They must not know. Pick yourself up and follow me."
Her voice sounded so familiar like he had heard it hundreds of times before but he couldn't quite place it. Gabe bit his tongue and staggered up. He didn't have a good feeling about what he was about to do but they got Trevor and he didn't really have a choice.
