"You know what time of year it is!!" Mrs Tary announced in her most enthusiastic voice. The class groaned.
"What's going on?" Gabe asked.
"Every year, ManWol invites us to do some student exchange program with them," Maddison replied. Trevor immediately taking out his phone and began searching ManWol on the web.
"Except that we are the only ones going there," Tessa groaned and everyone chimed in with their agreements.
"Isn't ManWol one of the most prestigious schools around?" Trevor asked after he finally landed on their school page.
"Sure, it is, with the most snobbish people around!" John, from Gabe's swim team, said with a hint of sarcasm.
"Come on class, it's not that bad." Mrs Tary chimed in putting on her most upbeat and sympathetic tone.
"But it is," a girl whined. " They think they're so high and mighty with all their money." Several other girls nodded their heads with agreement. "They make fun of us Mrs Tary because we all go to a public school."
"I mean just because they're from a prestigious private school, they think they're better than us," a boy named john added. "I mean, they kind of are. They have flawless skin, neatly styled hair, spotless uniforms and let's not forget about the guys there. They're giants!"
"Guys, come on now, you know we have to at least have a group going," Mrs Tary sighed. "It'll look great on your school record." She smiled weakly. When no one volunteered to go she added, " I'll add 20 extra marks to your next assignment."
At that statement, everyone turned their heads towards Tessa. Everyone knew Tessa was a perfectionist in everything. Especially in school. She'll work her butt off to get an 'A'. Unfortunately, even she refused the offer.
"ManWol is not worth it," she added.
"Come on princess, how bad can it be? I'll go," Gabe raised his hand.
Mrs Tary's anxious expression turned to relief. "Thank you, Gabe. Anyone else? We need at least one more person from this class."
"Are you crazy!? Do you want to risk your sanity there?" Tessa screamed back. Gabe was taken aback by Tessa's response. Tessa had always been sour to him and never cared about his well-being but this time, it was different.
"They once drenched my coat in ice water without me knowing. When I spoke up, they made fun of my coat as it is not branded nor made with any expensive material." Another girl in the class added. "Do you have any idea how cold it is there in Korea?!"
"Korea?" Gabe stuttered now unsure of his decision to volunteer. "Mrs Tary, is it possible for me to not go on this trip?"
"You have to get someone to swap with you," Mrs Tary replied.
Gabe began scanning around the room but no one dared make eye contact. Gabe sighed.
Trevor patted him on the back, "On the bright side, you have 20 free marks."
"Easy for you to say, grandpa, you don't have to go."
Now, Mrs Tary was rubbing her temple sighing heavily. "We'll just pick a name from a hat like we did last year," she concluded.
Everyone except Gabe was instructed to write their names on a small piece of paper and put their names in the hat. Mrs Tary reached her hand into the hat and pulled out a piece of paper. The entire room dropped silent. The whole process felt like hours, even though it might've been mere seconds. Mrs Tary carefully unfolded the piece of paper revealing the name written.
"And the name is, Tessa Morrison," their teacher announced. Everyone breathed their sigh of relief as they return about to their chattering as if nothing had happened. Tessa buried her face in her hands and moaned her loudest moan.
The days counting down to their group's departure to Korea flew past fast and in a blink of an eye, they were on their last day in San Diego. The group would be in Korea for 2 weeks living in a small apartment not too far of a walk distance from ManWol.
The day before, the group had a briefing on their schedules, trip procedures, guidelines, etc. Which would all be further explained at ManWol. A group of 4 students total would be going. They're Gabe Waltson, Tessa Morrison, Wayne Livingstone and Beth Edwards.
Despite Wayne's usual arrogant attitude, during the briefing, he was unusually nervous. Wayne had grown taller since the last time Gabe saw him. Now, he was a full 5 inches taller than him. The group was told that they would meet their guide, Koo Han at the airport when they arrived in Korea. He would bring them to their apartment.
The night before Gabe has to leave, Maddison, Ron, Fred, Trevor met up at 'The House' for a quick meeting.
Fred invited everyone over to sit at the dining room table.
"Woah, your house looks pretty neat?" Maddison said in awe as both she and Ron looked around the house.
Fred sat down and decided to commence the meeting. "Here's the deal, Gabe would have to leave for Korea tomorrow morning and I'm afraid that if there were to be any trouble back here in San Diego, someone would have to assist Trevor on the mission."
"We'll do it," both Maddison and Ron said in unison. "I mean, we used to do it anyway before you boys showed up and beaten us to it," Maddison added. Ron nodding with agreement.
"Great. Trevor, do you think you can whip both of them up a watch like the ones that you two boys are wearing now?" Fred asked.
"Sure, no problem," Trevor replied confidently.
"Then it's settled! See you in 2 weeks, Gabe."
