The next day, Meira watched as Bella searched for Edward Cullen. Bella had told Meira about what had happened in Biology class the day before. Meira didn't like the way Edward had acted and she planned to tell him exactly how she felt, but when he wasn't around, she counted him as lucky for now. Bella wanted to confront Edward as well, but Meira wasn't sure how well Bella would do at confronting someone since she was so awkward.
As soon as Meira arrived at school, Alice and Jasper seemed to gravitate towards her. Meira felt closer to Jasper than she did Alice, but she honestly believed the couple were two of the best people she'd ever met. Rosalie wasn't happy that Alice and Jasper were friends with one of the new girls, but she didn't voice her discomfort, since she seen how happy Jasper was around the girl. She was disappointed, but Jasper was happy with his human friend, and she was going to try and accept it.
"Class, today we're learning about wars that happened since America was discovered. Obviously, we'll be learning about one war at a time, such as World War I, but I want you all to do a project on a war. In pairs, you will pick a war and get as much information as you can. The team with the most accurate and best paper will be rewarded with a pass to exempt them from all pop quizzes for the wars." Mr. Smith said, when class began.
"Do we get to pick our partner?" Finn, one of the boys in class, asked, looking over at his girlfriend with a smirk.
"Yes, but the teams have to be a boy and a girl, and you can not pick your girlfriend or boyfriend, because I know you won't be doing the project correctly." Mr. Smith answered, and some of the kids groaned.
Everyone in the classroom seemed to want to pair with Meira, which she realized when almost all of them turned towards her. Jasper placed his hand on top of her coat-covered arm, catching her attention instantly.
"Do you want to be my partner?" He asked, and she nodded.
"Yes, please. I don't think I could team up with any of these other kids." She replied, a smile of relief washing over her.
Some people groaned in annoyance when Meira found a partner, while others were surprised that she was partners with Jasper Hale, since he never talked to anyone in the school. She was the only one, other than his family and girlfriend, that he talked to and actually seemed to like.
"What war do you want to do?" Meira asked, causing Jasper to look over at her.
"Do you have any preferences, ma'am?" He asked, and she shook her head.
"I like history, so all of it is interesting to me. I'd rather you chose, since I'm fine with anything." She replied, causing him to nod.
"What about the Civil War?" He suggested, smirking to himself since he knew for a fact that they'd win if they chose his idea.
"Sure, works for me." She answered, smiling at Jasper.
"You all will have a week to complete your projects. Obviously we're not going to allow this project to take anymore of our class time than it is right now, so you guys will have to work on it after school or during break," Mr. Smith announced, causing a few students to groan,"think of it this way, you'll have an excuse to go to a friend's house, or make a new friend out of someone you didn't know well before." He commented, and the class seemed to lighten up at that idea.
"You can come over to mine if you want. If not, that's fine." Meira said, and Jasper stared at her for a moment.
He wanted to become better friends with the girl, but he wasn't sure about being around her, Bella, and Charlie alone.
"Oh, Alice can come too if you want. She has the prettiest hand writing, and she could write down everything for us while we gather our information." Meira commented, sensing that Jasper seemed a little hesitant about going over to her place.
"Would Bella and Charlie be alright with us going over there?" Jasper asked, causing the girl to bite her lip.
"Oh crap, I forgot about Charlie. I don't know if I should ask him another favor. I already asked him if I could visit Aberdeen over the weekend, so I don't know if he'd be alright with it." Meira replied, making Jasper frown.
"You should come over to my house tonight, and give yourself the chance to ask Charlie in person about the project later." Jasper commented, and Meira nodded in agreement.
Jasper could feel the sadness oozing out of her when she mentioned Aberdeen, but he didn't mention it. He wasn't sure why she was so sad about going there, but he didn't want to upset her anymore. He wondered if Alice knew what Meira's connection to Aberdeen was, but he also didn't want to impose on Meira's personal life.
"Cobain seems like she's a little down. What'd you do, Jas, bore her with your facts about history?" Emmett commented, causing Jasper to scowl.
"No, I didn't. She was talking about visiting Aberdeen this weekend and she became upset. I don't know why, but I wasn't going to make her more upset by asking." Jasper replied, making Emmett nod nonchalantly.
"I believe I heard the name Cobain in Aberdeen before. Maybe she's going there to see her family." Rosalie muttered, trying not to be so rude about Meira.
"Oh, I think you might be right. She told me she lost her father, so maybe she's visiting his grave or somewhere she remembers him most." Jasper said, as Alice nodded in agreement.
"She feels happy while she's there, I've seen it, but I don't want to intrude on her story." Alice commented, looking over at Meira.
Bella tried to cheer up her best friend, but she knew when Meira thought about her father, she wasn't easy to cheer up. Bella just hoped whatever made her think of her father didn't cause her to be depressed too often, otherwise Bella may have to figure out a way to get her best friend out of Forks High for her own mental health...
