Chapter 7

Sam burried himself in the library as soon as he and Dean had finished talking. He pulled out files on every victim. He'd sprawled out the information on the table in front of him. Nothing made sense. He couldn't see any connection. No two people were born in the same town, went to the same schools, or had any connection before work. Sam felt ready to quit searching and assume they were random kills.

But they can't be random. This lady went looking for the last one. So, one would assume, she was looking for the other ones too. These had to be planned. There's no other explanation, Sam thought, but... what's their connection?

Sam kept looking. Looking and looking. The only similarities were their careers: social services worker, FBI agent, police officer, or detective. They'd all began their careers at different times, in different places, and for different reasons. He needed something to shed light on the case. He needed some push to help him figure out what was going on. But he had no idea how to get that.

-------

"Dean?"

The area surrounding Dean was cold. There was nothing there: grey, dark, and empty. All he could tell about the area was that he wasn't alone.

"Dean..."

A female's voice called him, it sounded strained and raspy. A shadow moved in the distance.

"Dean... please..."

He tried to move but couldn't. The shadow seemed to be moving toward him.

"Dean... help me..."

The voice began to sound terrified.

"Dean!"

The voice sounded like sheer panic.

"DEAN!"

The sound of a car crashing turned into an alarm going off as Dean was pulled out from his dream. Dean rubbed his eyes and slammed his hand against the clock beside his motel bed, silencing the blaring alarm.

Dean sat on the edge of the bed, contemplating what he'd just dreamed. Was it someone trying to reach out to him? Was it just the stress of not making any progress? He didn't know. He checked the police reports, looking for anything new. Anything.

"Shit..."

Staring him in the face on the screen was a report of another suicide. A woman had been found in a bathtub with a slit throat.

Dean picked up his phone and dialed Sam's number.

"Hello?" An obviously exasperated Sam answered.

"We've got another one."

"What?"

"Another murder. A woman was found in her bathroom with a slit throat. It's the same girl."

"Great. Text me the address and I'll meet you there."

Dean hung up and sent Sam the address. He then grabbed his coat and headed out the door towards the impala.

------

"This is the second one in two days. You guys have any idea who's doing all this? The police are really worried." The same police officer from the last scene greeted them at the door to the small appartment.

"It looks like everyone's treating this one like a murder. What changed?" Dean asked.

"I'll show you," the young man walked them into the bathroom where there was a taped off area on the floor by the tub.

There was a weak, shaky message written in blood, presumably the victims.

You guys are slow, aren't you?

The small cop stepped forward, "What do you think it means? I mean, who's the killer talking to?"

Sam and Dean exchanged a confused and slightly frightened look.

"Don't know," Dean started, "But we're going to find out."

"What was the victim's name?" Sam asked.

"Lucy Kendric."

"Kendric?" Dean asked, astonished.

"Yeah, why? You know that name?"

Dean shrugged, looking at the floor, "Yeah. Used to know someone by that name."

"Well, I hope that this wasn't someone related," The cop scratched the back of his neck nervously.

"Yeah, me too," Dean sighed.

The officer was called away by one of the detectives, and Sam looked at Dean.

"We need to get to the library. I know what's connecting these victims," Sam looked about nervously.

"What?"

"I didn't see it before, I don't know how I missed it but..."

"What!?" Dean persisted.

"It's Shane."

---------------

Sam and Dean practically ran to the library where Sam pulled out the files again, laying them out in the order they were killed.

"So get this," Sam began, "victims one through four were killed in Indiana. They were working with the FBI, specilizing in the behavioral annalysis of serial killers. All except one of them, who was their contact back at the agency, worked directly on that case."

"Ok," Dean mused, scratching his head, "but that doesn't mean anything. What about-"

"Victims five through nine were police officers in Wisconsin, all of which worked on Shane's case. Victims ten through the one before this were social services officers, who dealt with child placement. Guess what case they had in common?"

"Shanes?"

"Exactly."

"And the last victim?"

"Lucy Kendric was Lauren's younger sister."

"But what ties does she have to Shane?"

"Don't know. But she's connected to Lauren, and we all know how Lauren ties to her."

Dean sat down. He wasn't sure what it all meant. It made sense that Shane was the connection, she had to be, but... why? How could Shane be alive? And if she was alive, why hadn't she reached out to them?

"Sam... do you think that Shane," Dean paused, sighing in a mix of frustration, sadness, and uncertianty, "do you think she's alive? I mean, do you think she would do this?"

Sam paused, moving to sit across from his brother. "I don't know. It could be her vengeful spirit, but... people saw a blonde girl, presumably Shane, and if she was a spirit, they wouldn't have had the interactions they did. So we have to assume she's alive. But the real question is-"

"Where is she?"
