Sam had returned about twenty minutes later with burgers. The trio ate, talked mindlessly, and told Shane about how the world had been since she "left." After they finished, they all decided to go to bed. Sam and Dean had decided to take Shane to see Bobby, hoping he could have some insight into what was going on with her and how she was able to push a demon out of her head without an exorcism. So they got rest for the night and headed out first thing the next morning.
Shane slept for the entirety of the car ride, the exhaustion finally catching up with her. She'd been famished, exhausted, and thirsty. The demon hadn't totally neglected taking care of Shane's body, but it hadn't exactly kept everything at 100% either.
Sam and Dean mulled over possibilities for what was going on with her. All of their ideas seemed ridiculous. Not a single thing even sounding like a real possibility. After the majority of the trip was behind them, they decided to stop pondering options until talking to Bobby.
They pulled up to Bobby's house around 9 pm. Dean and Sam got out of the car, Sam headed inside to find Bobby, and Dean stayed to get Shane inside. Shane was still sound asleep. Dean picked her up bridal style and headed for the house.
Dean walked into the living room where Bobby and Sam were talking, and set Shane down on one of the couches.
"So this is the kid?" Bobby asked, nodding toward the sleeping blonde.
"Yup. This is her."
Bobby looked her up and down. "Doesn't look like much of a hunter. She still recovering?"
Dean nodded, "yeah. She's got some minor injuries still. All the rest are just scars and bruises. Some dehydration and starvation, but she's working on it."
Bobby nodded. "So, tell me again what happened with her?"
Dean sat down on a chair across from Shane and started retelling her story. "Her dad got possessed and killed her mom and brother, then killed himself. Tried to kill her, but didn't end up doing it. When we got there originally, everything was fine, but the demon came back, possessed her guardian at the time and tried to kill her again. Then as we were leaving with her, the car crashed, and we hadn't seen her until recently."
"And what happened to her since you saw her last?"
"She's been possessed."
Bobby raised his eyebrows. "For four years?"
"Yup."
"And the thing didn't kill her?"
"Nope. It killed at least 20 other people through her, though."
Bobby sat silent for a moment. "She's been through a lot for a kid her age."
Sam nodded. "That's not even all of it. We were trying to exorcise the demon, but... ended up just fighting with her. Something happened, and the demon stopped attacking us. And... well..."
Dean chimed in, "Shane started glowing white and levitating. And when that stopped, the demon wasn't in her anymore."
"Yeah," Sam added, "she got the demon out without an exorcism."
Bobby looked shocked. "She what?!"
"She got the demon out on her own." Dean finished.
Bobby sat dumbfounded for a moment. He rubbed his temples in frustration. "Any other details you two idjits remember from that night?"
"Yeah," Dean added, "she screamed something."
"What?"
"Get out of my head."
Bobby stared at the floor, shocked. "Alright. Get the kid to bed. I'm going to do some research, and try and find something before bed. If I don't, I'll keep looking in the morning. I have... an idea, but... I don't want to make any assumptions before I'm sure." Dean and Sam nodded. "Alright. There are a few spare rooms upstairs. Get to it. You all look like hell."
Sam looked at Dean, "I can take Shane this time."
"No," Dean got up and picked the little blonde up, "I've got her."
Sam nodded. "Thanks, Bobby. I can help you research in the morning."
"Alright," Bobby nodded, "but get some sleep right now."
Sam headed for the stairs with Dean, who was still holding Shane. "How do you want to do this?"
"I'll stay with her. You can take a room on your own."
Sam chuckled, "acting like a bit of a father there, Dean."
"I told her I'd be there for her. I told her that I'd protect her. I failed once. I'm not doing it again."
Sam frowned. "You can't protect her from everything, Dean."
"I can try."
With that, Dean turned toward one of the rooms and headed in with Shane. He placed her in the bed, and laid on the couch. "Sleep tight, Kid."

Later
"Dean? ... Deeean? ......... Dean!" Shane's whisper-yell echoed across the small room.
Dean stirred, slowly realizing what was going on. "What, Shane?"
"Um...."
"What?" Dean sighed.
"It's going to sound stupid..."
"And?"
Shane was silent for a moment.
"Spit it out, kiddo."
"Can you turn the flashlight on?"
Dean paused, surprised. "What?"
"Can you turn it on and just leave it on the floor? You know... kinda..."
"Like a night light?"
Shane was silent again. Dean could practically feel her embarrassment. "...yeah. That."
Dean chuckled, reaching over to the coffee table to pick up the flashlight that was there. He flicked it on and pointed it at Shane, preparing to make a joke about her childish request. He noticed that she looked like she'd been crying. "Shane, what's wrong?"
"Nothing. I'm fine." She wiped at her eyes vigorously.
"Liar," Dean stood up and walked over to the bed, setting the flashlight down on the nightstand. He climbed into the bed next to Shane. "C'mere," he put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her over towards him. She snuggled into his side in a way that made her seem... scared. "Shane?"
"Yeah?"
"Are you scared of the dark?"
"If you laugh-"
"No, no," Dean chuckled, "I was just curious. Get some sleep, ok?"
"Yeah, ok. But if you tell Sam-"
"I won't! Don't worry."
"Promise me."
"I promise. Your secret is safe with me."
