Chapter 20

Hot. Like fire piercing through the skin. Like bathing in firey coals. That's all she could feel. It felt like someone was pouring hot metal down her throat. She couldn't see anything. Everything was black. Then, her vision started to clear. What she saw horrified her. Flickering images. Horrible pictures: the impala crashed into a tree, a man cowering in fear, blood dripping from his face, countless terrified, crying faces of men and women as her hands slit their throats, and Sam and Dean, being beaten to a pulp by her own hands. The slideshow of nightmares just repeated and repeated until a new image popped up. It was a dark figure. It was tall, seemingly human, seemingly male. It's eyes were black, but glowing. It's voice was calm and smooth as it spoke to her.

"I know what you are."

She tried to run away, but she couldn't.

"I know what you are."

She tried screaming, but no sound came.

"I know what you are!"

She felt fire burning in her eyes.

"Monster!!!"

Shane jolted up in bed, a cold sweat drenching her skin. She looked around the unfamiliar room, momentarily forgetting where she was. Well... she didn't really know where she was, but she knew she was at Bobby's, and she knew Sam and Dean were here. Somewhere anyway.

Shane put her feet on the cold, wooden floor. She didn't have the heart last night to tell Dean about the nightmares. She'd been having them since the demon left. The entire car ride here she had been in one long, tormenting nightmare until someone picked her up. Then the dream ended. She hoped they'd just go away on their own. The dark never scared Shane, but now... being back in total darkness made Shane feel like she was possessed again. She hated it.

She walked to the door of the room and opened it. Dean was no where to be seen, but she could hear faint voices coming from down stairs. She reached the staircase and started down it, glimpsing Sam, Dean, and an unfamiliar older man in the living room.

"Hey, look who's up!" Dean smiled over at Shane as she descended the stairs, "c'mere, you've got to meet someone." Shane walked into the living room sheepishly. "Shane, this is Bobby. Bobby, this is Shane."

"Nice to meet you." Bobby smiled.

"You too." Shane sheepishly stated, crossing her left hand to grip her right wrist.

"We're still digging some stuff up, Shane. It might be a while before we find anything," Sam sighed.

"There's not a lot of lore with anything similar to what you did," Bobby added frustratedly.

Shane nodded. She stood still as Sam and Bobby started ruffling through more papers and books. Dean noticed something was off.

"I'm going to take Shane to get something to eat. We'll be back later. Call me if you find anything," Dean stood up and walked toward the entrance to the room where Shane was standing, "c'mon, kid. Let's go."

Shane followed Dean out of the house and to the impala. He walked to the driver's side and opened the door. Shane began climbing into the back seat when Dean interrupted her. "You can sit shotgun, kid." Shane paused, and closed the door to the back seat. She climbed into the passenger seat and shut the door.

After a few minutes of silence as the two traveled down the road, Dean finally spoke up. "What's bugging you so much, kid? You've barely said a word this morning."

Shane was staring out the window. "I'm fine. Just...," she looked over at Dean, who was giving her a skeptical look. "I'm just worried about all this. I mean... what if I'm not as normal as I think I am? What if I'm not even human? What if I'm some kind of... monster?

"What made you think of all that?"

"I just... I don't know. I was thinking about what might be going on and..." Shane's voice trailed off.

"What, Shane?"

"What if I'm something bad?"

Dean looked over at Shane with a look made of puzzlement and fear.

"What if... what if I'm something you have to k-"

"Don't," Dean snapped, "don't even say that. Don't even think that. I don't care what happens, Shane, no one is going to kill you. It will not happen. I'm not going to let it happen, okay? I told you that no matter what we'd get through it, and that's what's going to happen. Not unless they kill me first."

Shane looked at Dean. "Why do care about taking care of me so much?"

Dean paused as he pulled into the parking lot of a small diner. "Because... you're family. We stick together no matter what. That's just how it works."

"But we're not family, Dean."

"Yeah?" Dean looked over at Shane. His eyes were filled with determination and care. "Whether you like it or not, Shane, you're part of our family now. You're like a sister to me and Sam. And the way I see it, you don't have any one else. Yeah, we're not perfect, but we take care of each other. We protect each other. And we love each other. Not matter how pissed off someone makes you.  Besides, I don't really like the idea of you being out there in this world all alone. Being alone... it sucks. And I don't want you to have to go through that."

Shane smiled at Dean. "Thanks, Dean. I'll admit. I kinda like the sound of Shane Winchester."

Dean chuckled. "It suits you, Shanie. I like it. Now, how 'bout we get something to eat?"
