Dean hung up the phone and bolted across the street. He stood exactly where Shane had been and looked around. Where did she go?

"Dean!" Sam called across the street, "Dean, what's wrong?" Sam ran over, joining his brother in the alley.

"She was here."

Sam was astonished, "what? Shane? She was-"

"Here. She was here, Sam. She was right here. Right here, and..." Dean put his head in his hands. I let her get away again. I let her disappear again. I... I lost her.... again.

"We're going to find her, Dean. We're going to find Shane and fix whatever's going on," Sam turned to head back to the motel. "Right now, let's just get out gear and figure out a plan. I'm sure Shane's got to be holding up somewhere. She's just a kid. It can't be that hard to find her, right?"

"She's possessed."

Sam turned back to face his brother. "What?"

"She's possessed, Sam! She was standing right there and she looked at me. Her eyes were black, Sam! Elen even said that she's possessed!" Dean raked his fingers through his hair. "We need to find her and fast before she does anything else or that thing does anything to her."

"Then it looks like we've got some work to do."

------

Sam and Dean gathered as much information from Shane's past activities as they could. They mapped out possible locations in the area, prepped rock salt weapons, and planned out how they'd find her. The brothers got some food delievered to their room and ate. They decided to rest before trying to find Shane tomorrow.

Sam fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Dean however, tossed and turned. When he finally fell asleep, he began to feel like something was clouding his mind, and he drifted off into another dream...

There was a thick, grey fog surrounding him. He felt normal, but he noticed a shadow moving in the distance.

"You just don't give up do you?" Dean heard a female's voice, but it was harsh, and cold. "You just keep trying to get him to hear you, don't you?"

There was a smack, followed by a whimper of pain.

"He... going... hear... me..." Shane. Dean knew it was her. She sounded so weak. He could only hear every other word. It was like listening to her through a broken telephone connection.

"You're one persistent little piece of shit aren't you?" Another smack, but no whimper. "I'm going to enjoy making you watch her die, Dean." The harsh female voice laughed.

The fog around Dean cleared, revealing two versions of Shane in front of him. One was standing, tall, clothed entirely in black, the other was sitting, tied to a chair, bleeding, and barely being able to sit up. The second Shane had tear filled blue eyes. The tears occasionally spilled out of her eyes, mixing with the blood on her face. Dean tried to move. He looked down to see chains restraining his feet, keeping him immobile.

"See? You can't help her, Dean. She's going to die." The first Shane turned to face Dean, her black eyes staring directly into Dean's green ones.  "It's going to be your fault," the demonic Shane turned the weak, battered Shane's head toward Dean. He looked into her pain filled, teary, blue eyes. She was mouthing words to him but he couldn't hear her.

"Shane, you gotta speak up. I... I can't hear you. Please, Shane... just try... give me one word. Just one word to tell me where you are. Please, Shane..."

He watched her face. She was still mouthing words, but Dean still couldn't hear her.

"Shane... please... I can't hear you. Just try a little more. Please."

Another set of tears fell out of Shane's eyes. She looked like she was screaming, her eyes squinted shut, jaw tense. "Ri..." Shane's eyes opened for a second. She looked at Dean, more tears pouring out, her body contorting in obvious pain. She was screaming. Dean could tell, to Shane, what she was saying was a scream, but he couldn't hear her.

"You pathetic little beast," the black Shane hit Shane in the side of the head, knocking her chair over on to its side. Shane contorted her neck so she was facing Dean again. "He'll never hear you. He will never hear you."

"Shane, kid, please. Just try. Please. I need to find you. I can't help you-"

"You can't help her! You'll never help her!" The black Shane kicked Shane in the ribs. Shane kept her eyes locked on Dean. She sucked in a breath and screamed, obvious pain taking over her body. The only thing word she was yelling, screaming at the top of her lungs, came to Dean's ears like a painfulled whisper, and as the word came out of her mouth, she passed out.

"River."
