Everything was black. She couldn't see a thing. She could hear intermittent sounds of pain, effort, and aggression. They would cut in and out like a scratched CD. She couldn't tell what was going on except for those sounds and the excruciating pain that would shoot through her body from time to time.
Deep in the demon's head, she tried to muster up her strength. She needed something to get her to fight the demon inside her. Strength. Courage. Adrenaline even. Something. Anything.
But she had nothing.
She was entirely numb. She felt powerless. She had wasted herself trying to communicate with Dean. The worst scenarios played through her head about what was happening. Dean was fighting. Sam was dead. And the demon was going to win. She was possessed and hurting her only friends. The demon inside her had won.
How could she fight the demon in her head when she couldn't even fight the hopelessness inside of her?
The last few years, Shane had watched herself kill people. People she used to know. People who helped her. People who tried to be her friend when she needed one most. She'd even killed random people she'd never met before, innocents who had nothing to do with her, nothing to do with the demon.
She had become a monster.
"Hear..."
What? Shane heard a voice pop into her head.
"Listen.... me...."
...Dean?
"Sh....have....fight....."
Dean, I-I can't. I can't hear you. I can't say anything... I'm... I'm too weak.
"Can't...without....help...too...strong..."
Shane started to cry. She felt pain like she's never felt before. She was helpless. Hopeless. Weak.
"Try...please...me...for me..."
The words started being clearer.
"Shane please try...for me!"
It almost sounded unfiltered. Like Shane's real ears were listening, like she wasn't listening through the ears of the demon.
It sounded like Dean was talking directly to her.
"You can't reach her, Dean!"
It was the demon's voice this time. Cold, raspy, and disgusting. "She's given up. I've won."
Shane started to cry again. I tried, Dean. I really did. I'm just... not strong enough.
"Yes you are, Shane. You can fight it."
Did he... hear me?
"Forget it, Dean. She's gone. You will never-"
Shane stood up, pulling herself off whatever mental floor she'd collapsed on. She stood up. She actually stood up.
...and the demon stopped talking.
"She's never-"
Shane tried to move her arm. She imagined it. She imagined what it'd feel like. She tried it.
.and the demon let out a yelp of pain.
"You... will... not... control me..." Shane thought.
In the black void of her mind, a shadowy figure appeared. It looked like her, but beaten up, bloody, bruised, and with a knife sticking out of its thigh.
Shane stared the demon down.
"You. Will. Get. Out."
Shane charged at the demon and latched onto its throat. She felt pain surge through her body like she'd just been slammed to the ground.
Shane gripped its neck and dug her nails into its skin.
"You can't beat me, Shane. You've already tried!"
"No."
Shane started hitting the demon over and over again, ignoring the pain she felt at the same time.
"You don't own me. This is my body," Shane screamed as the demon fought back. Hitting just as hard. The pain she'd been feeling was now in the subconscious of her mind, adrenaline taking over her thoughts. "This is my body..."
Shane pulled the knife out of the demon's thigh and poised it above its throat, "and I want you out!"
The demon dodged. "You really think that's going to work on me, kid? I'm not human. You can't kill me."
Shane stepped away from the demon, a feeling unlike anything she'd ever felt before surging through her. It felt like pure, hot, white light was pulsing through her veins.
"This is my body. Not yours," she angrily cried. The demon took a step back, looking terrified. White light took over Shane's eyes. "And I want you to," she felt her fists connecting with something. But she couldn't tell what.
The light started burning. She felt it intensifying in her, giving her strength. So with all her might, she screamed louder than she'd ever screamed before:
"Get out of my head!!!"
