Matilda Clark was never a girl to duel for sentimental shit, she had always been a strong, brave, independent, self-sufficient person. Even in her first year, the Sorting Hat had spent quite some time debating in which house to put her, it didn't know if she was a better fit for Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. In the end, it had obviously decided that she would suit better in the badger's house, for she had a caring, loving, and loyal nature. Though she was used to hiding her true self from everyone, because of the home where she had grown up, with that stupid, snobbish, git she had as a brother, she had learned to never show her emotions, not if she wanted them stepped on.

When she encountered Sara García and Cedric Diggory on the night of September 1st, 1989, for the first time ever, she had no idea that those two would be the reason that she would eventually learn to share her feelings. Sara and Cedric had taught her that not everybody was like Thomas, not even close. Sara was a loving person; she threw herself into love with no life jacket on, she gave everything of herself while loving others, and didn't think twice about the possible consequences of that way of loving she had. Once you had gained her trust, she would stand by your side with shields and swords and would never leave. And Cedric, oh her dear and loving Cedric. They hadn't become friends right away; it had taken Matilda a bit of time to get used to the lad. At first, she had believed him to be obnoxious, self-absorbed, and honestly, a bit of prat. With time, she had realized that her views of the boy couldn't be more wrong, yes, he could be a little vain, but that was only because of the way his father thought of him, and Sara and Matilda took it as their personal challenge to bring the boy's feet back to the solid ground, and they had obviously succeeded. By the end of their first year, Cedric was the humblest boy in all the Hufflepuff house, maybe even in all Hogwarts. By the time her second year arrived, Matilda just knew that Sara was her sister, and Cedric her best friend.

Their friendship was a nonverbal pact, a pact to always be by each other's side, a pact to always have the relationship they had. Sara had kept her end of the deal perfectly, but she and Cedric hadn't. Matilda didn't know how it happened, she had a blurred memory of the first time she and Cedric had kissed, during that night on their fifth year, that seemed so long ago. Let's say she was more than a little intoxicated, as so was him. After a long journey of their relationship that included casual snogging, what you could call a break, another girl involved, and jealousy plots, they had finally admitted they had feelings for each other.

And then he was taken away from her.

Matilda didn't understand why. Why on this miserable world, filled with envy, fear, and a fucking dark wizard luring around, one of the most good persons she knew had to die. And have such a tragic death.

A single tear ran down her face and she wiped it away furiously. She knew she and Cedric weren't in love, but Merlin right now if felt like that. She had waited so long for him to break up with Cho, and her happiness had lasted so little. Fucking Helga Hufflepuff, she missed him.

"Alright, I was just with him" Sara said barging into their bedroom, putting her bag on her bed and sitting with Matilda on hers "and he hasn't asked me out again, I'm pretty sure I scared him away with all the crying I did the last time" she sighed.

Matilda looked up at her friend and smiled putting on her nightstand the picture she was holding. Just then, Sara seemed to realize the state of her friend. Her eyes became glassy, and she smiled sadly, taking the picture in her hands.

"We look fucking happy in this" she said wiping away her tears and Matilda laughed.

"We do" Sara smiled again at her friend and threw herself towards the blonde. She wrapped her in a tight hug, Matilda's arms wrapped themselves around Sara, and her head fell on her shoulder. They spend a few minutes like that, holding each other, tears silently rolling down their cheeks, no words exchanged, just their feelings about the loss of their dear friend out in the open. They didn't need to say anything, they both knew what a terrible loss Cedric's death had been to them. And even though Sara had no idea about the kind of relationship Matilda and the boy had towards near the end, that was no obstacle for her to console her friend, for both friends to console each other.
