The next morning was hard for Sara.
After the lunch at The Burrow the day before, she and George, and of course Fred, went back to their place in Diagon Alley. As soon as they got there, Sara excused herself with George and went straight to bed. Wondering if there was something bothering her, Fred followed, passing through the closed door, and found the young woman laying on the bed, still with her clothes on, the light turned out and staring at the view of Diagon Alley that the big window gave her. Fred sighed mentally. With the moonlight glowing over her, she looked truly beautiful, but at the same time, beautifully sad.
"Love, what's wrong?" Fred approached her slowly, sitting beside her at the edge of the bed. She knew this woman like the back of his hand, and he was absolutely sure that something was bothering her.
Sara gave a quick glance at the redhead and then looked back at the window. She couldn't stand to see him looking at her like that. Not when there was nothing, nothing he could do to make her feel better. He couldn't touch her, couldn't hold her, couldn't love her the way she needed him at that moment. The look of pure worry in his deep brown eyes only made her feel guilty.
Sara knew Molly Weasley had meant well in giving her the necklace, she knew her intentions came only of the good of her heart, but she couldn't help the way she felt because of it. The gift only reminded her of all she had lost. "He wanted to give it to you on your wedding day" she said, and that day had never come, and Sara didn't know if it ever would. It was not fair. The Weasleys were good persons, she was a good person, and Fred, her dear, loving, sweet, sweet Fred. He was definitely the best person of them all. Why would life be so cruel to all of them and would take him away? None of them deserved the pain that came along with losing one of the most precious persons in their life. It was not fair.
"Nothing's wrong" she answered him quietly "I'm just really tired" she managed to look back at him, a small smile on her lips, a fake smile. "Do you mind if I sleep alone tonight?"
Fred seemed startled by her question, but he knew her better than he knew himself, and even though he didn't know what was bothering her, he knew she needed space.
"Alright" he replied, giving her a sweet smile "I'll be in the living room if you need me" he put his hand briefly over hers. Merlin how Sara wanted to feel the touch of that hand "Sleep tight".
"Thanks"
Once Fred was out of the bedroom, Sara turned around and sat at the edge of the bed, her legs hanging down. Fidgeting with her hands, she glanced at the velvet box sitting on her nightstand table, and a groan of frustration came out of her lips. Her hand reached for the box and then she stopped herself.
"Oh, fuck it" she whispered and took the package.
Slowly, and with trembling hands, she opened it once again. The lion and the badger stood close together as if they were trying to hold each other close, never wanting to let go. She could imagine Fred looking for the perfect gift to give her on their wedding day, it had been such a sweet gesture, and she loved the necklace, she really did, she just also wished that it was him who could have given it to her.
She passed her fingers over the animals, slowly touching the cold material.
"I love you so much" Fred told her pecking her on the nose. A soft giggle escaped her lips. They laid together on their bed, limbs entangled as one, sheets spread over their naked bodies.
"I love you so much" she replied smiling.
Sara quickly withdrew her fingers from the necklace confused. Looking down at the jewel, a frown between her eyebrows.
