Patrick immediately put his drink down and took Bodhi from me. He handed him to Gabrielle who was close by, Patrick whispered something in her ear and she nodded, taking Bodhi into her arms carefully.
Pulling me by the hand, Patrick led me into a sun lounge around the back of the house. It was then that I broke down and fell into his arms.
"Ellianah, talk to me, please." He mumbled, rubbing my back soothingly as I cried into his shirt.
"I never, ever thought he'd do something like that to me." I said, choking on my words over the years spilling from my eyes.
"Tell me what happened, Ell."
Patrick sat us both down on the sofa, facing me. He frowned sadly as I looked into his eyes, desperately fiddling with my bracelets on my bare wrists.
"I was outside looking for Pete and I saw him and Gabe, and then I heard them talking but they hadn't seen me because I waited behind and I heard them saying some awful things. Gabe was freaking out at Pete and I didn't know why but then, then he said that Pete slept with another girl Patrick he slept with another girl..." My voice broke and I collapsed into Patrick, not for the first time. It was heart wrenching to even say the words and I felt sick as I spat them from between my quivering lips. Patrick's arms encased me tightly as I squeezed my eyes shut, trying not to soak his shirt anymore. Feeling him draw in a sharp breath, I knew instantly that Patrick was angry. His arms were rock solid around my torso and his breaths were long and slow, as though he was desperately trying to control himself from raging on the spot.
"Ell, take deep breaths, come on." Patrick soothed me.
"I can't, Patrick. He cheated on me!" I cried, throwing my head into my hands as Patrick tried to figure out what to do.
He gulped, pacing around the room quickly. He kept twisting his thumbs around one another, letting me know how anxious he was. My heart was breaking into two and poor Patrick was left to deal with me.
"Where's Gabe?"
"What?" I choked.
"Where's Gabe? I need Gabe right now..."
"I don't-"
Before I could finish speaking, Patrick had gone. I assumed he was looking for Gabe but I didn't want to follow him. The only person I wanted to see right now was Pete, but only if he was going to come in and tell me it was all a lie, a joke, even though it wasn't funny at all.
Hearing footsteps, my head snapped up from my eyes being transfixed on the floor. I saw Gabe. Patrick wasn't there, but Gabe was. He was stood in the doorway looking at me as though he was about to cry. That's when I knew that it wasn't a joke. It wasn't fake, it was real. And it was happening right then.
"I'm so fucking sorry, Pete's an idiot and I should have t-"
I stood up and threw myself at Gabe, who graciously wrapped his arms around me, holding me close. He squeezed me tightly and I lightly draped my arms around his neck, resting my head on his chest since I was nowhere near his height. I felt him rest his head on top of my own, whispering his apologies over and over again, although it didn't make me feel any better.
"How did you-"
"I came looking for Pete and I heard you talking outside..." I whispered, looking up at him.
He shook his head, "I'm sorry you had to hear us arguing, I'm sorry you had to hear any of it."
"It's, it's not your fault but," I coughed, "Would you have told me?"
Gabe's jaw dropped and he took my hands in his own, tangling our fingers together, "Where do you think I was going when I came back inside? I was looking for you for ages! I'm just so sorry that you had to go through that, I only found out before the party and I almost didn't come but I knew Pete would have the guts to tell you so, I had to come. I had to tell you-"
"I heard what you said outside." I said, cutting Gabe off. He didn't need to say anymore, I knew how he felt and I knew that he instantaneously despised Pete.
"What?"
"When you stood up for me. When you said that you would never do anything like that to me, I wanted to say thank you because I'm glad I have one person that I know is never going to minimise me in their mind for long enough to do something crazy."
I hugged Gabe again and he just laughed, hugging me back.
"I would never, you know that anyway. But, what's going to happen now?"
"I have no idea, I don't even know where Patrick is..."
"When he came and found me, he was heading in search of Pete."
I pulled away from Gabe, running a hand through my hair stressfully. Having Gabe talk to me and reassuring me of conscious things made the situation microscopically better. But it didn't shadow anything that was coming.
"I should go, I need to find Pete." I breathed, cringing as I said his name. Now, it inflicted me with pain instead of butterflies.
"Wait!" Gabe called, as I was about to walk out back into the kitchen. I turned on my heels to look at him. He was stood up, as if leaning towards me but he paused, "N-nothing. It's nothing. I'm here if you need me later."
Nodding, I smiled at Gabe who smiled back, giving me a confidence boost as I ventured back into the house, ready to confront the man who I thought was my one true love.
