(5 DAYS TILL PROM)Taking a short breath, the cold air stung your throat. It wasn't even cold outside. You raised your hand and softly tapped the shoulder of Jacob. He was turned talking to his friends. His muscles tensed under your touch and he turned, looking you up and down before smiling.
"Y/N! I haven't seen you around." he said, turning to you and crossing his arms. His friends behind him continued their conversation without him.
"Hey...yeah..." you couldn't catch your words before he nudged your shoulder a little.
"You okay? Where have you been?" he asked. You shrugged.
"Yeah! I'm fine. So...you and Reya?" you started. Jacob chuckled and shrugged.
"I wouldn't put a label on us. Just Jacob and Reya is fine." he said. You raised your eyebrow and tilted your head to the side a bit.
"No label? She looked uh...pretty clingy, if you don't mind me saying." he gave you a warm smile, but it didn't have the same affect on you it should've had.
"I don't mind at all. She asked me out I think...two weeks ago? I just said yes and now I just let it go with the flow." he said, shoving his hands into his pockets. You felt your eyebrows raise a little.
'You kissed me a few days ago...'
Those words were only thought of. None of them left your mouth. You were confused and pretty shocked.
"You've been dating for two weeks?" you finally stuttered out. He nodded and kicked the ground a little, sighing.
"Haven't seen the need of cutting it off. Not like we're that serious." he chuckled. You're eyebrows furrowed and you tried to hide a frown.
"You..." you weren't sure what to say. Not like you needed to since apparently Jacob read you like a book.
"I kissed you?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. You nodded.
"You did. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the apparent fact that you did that while being in a relationship." you said, standing up a little taller than before. You felt your chest puff out in confidence and you crossed your arms. Jacob rubbed the back of his neck.
"Well, again I wouldn't really put a relationship label on me and Reya."
"Does she know that?" you replied quickly. Jacob hesitated. He seemed to choke on what he would say next, each word getting caught in his throat.
"W-Well..." he paused and his eyes trailed down before looking back to you, "why does it matter to you? Not like you liked me back."
You paused at his wording.
'Liked me back'
You realized in that moment that you had a chance to be with him if you had kissed back. You wondered what would've happened. Maybe you would go to prom with him and share that perfect kiss. Maybe you'd gain twenty dollars. Maybe you were just nervous and it would actually feel right. He was the right one.
Taking the time to think about your perfect kiss with Jacob felt different than before. Your vision of a perfect prom date was beginning to get foggy. You could barely see your perfect date. Your perfect kiss. It was almost as if your heart and mind didn't want it to be Jacob.
All you could vision were some odd senses you hadn't had before. The feeling of warm fuzziness from your date's arms around you. The smell of nice cologne a boy would wear only on special nights. The after taste of cheap cookies from the school's lazy choice of dance snacks. The sound of slow music filling your ears and bubbling around you.
Vision? Something you couldn't grasp. You couldn't see what was happening. You couldn't picture your perfect night anymore. It felt like it wasn't meant to be with Jacob. If not Jacob...then who? It had to be him. You were overthinking your feelings.
Stop being paranoid.
You sighed and looked to your feet.
"Says who?" you said. He scoffed and shifted his weight onto one foot, leaning to the side a bit.
"Says the fact that you freaked out when I kissed you." he said. You fumbled with your hands, looking up to him.
"Listen...I wanted to...actually talk to you about that." you sighed. He chuckled and shook his head.
"No no...it's fine. I totally understand." he said. You looked up to him, a little bit of hope fluttering in your chest.
"Really?"
"Of course. It's totally fine." he said, giving you a soft smile. You felt a soft grin spread across your face and you sighed in relief.
"I'm...I'm glad you understand. I was pretty nervous to talk to you." you giggled awkwardly. He patted your shoulder and gave you a reassuring smile.
"It's no big deal. I should've paid more attention before just going in for the kiss. Probably freaked you out." he said. You nodded. The air's tense thickness fell and you felt yourself calm down. Your shoulders relaxed and you felt more comfortable to talk to Jacob.
"It's okay. I just...I wasn't ready for it." you said shyly. He tilted his head to the side, rocking back and forth on his heels slightly.
"Why would you be? Hey, tell Tommy I'm sorry and that it was an honest mistake." he said. You gave him a confused smile, cocking your head away a little and raising an eyebrow.
"Oh...uh...did you do something to Tommy?" then, he looked a little confused himself.
"Well, I don't want him to be mad at me for trying to kiss his girlfriend." he said, laughing and nudging your arm playfully. Your heart sunk and your eyes widened.
"What?"
