(3 DAYS UNTIL PROM)
"So your prom's on a Tuesday?" Your mom asked, looking over to you. You shrugged.
"I mean, Wednesday is a late start." You replied, your hand trailing over the various dresses in front of you.
"Still. Shouldn't it be on a Friday?" She asked, placing a hand on her hip and tilting her head to the side.
"They decided to make the school's end of the year movie night on Friday." You said. Your mom mouthed an 'oh', nodding and looking to the dresses you were going through.
"See any you like?" She asked. You shook your head and sighed.
"Nope." you held your hands behind your back, letting your shoulders relax a little. Your mom looked to you and she gave you a sympathetic smile.
"Hey, it's okay. We can go look at another store. We have the rest of the day together. Don't worry about it." she said. You nodded and returned her smile.
"Thanks mom."
"Of course."
You both walked out of the store together. Your eyes flicked around the parking lot as you walked to your car. Your eyes landed on two people getting out of their car Jacob and Reya. She wrapped her arms around his arm, pressing her chest against him and biting her lip as she smiled innocently at him. He kissed her lips and walked with her to the store. You felt your heart sink. You didn't even realize you had stopped walking all together.
"That's Jacob?" you heard your mom ask. Your head whipped around to her. Her arms were crossed and she was eyeing down the boy with the girl clinging to his side. You pursed your lips and walked passed her, pulling her along with you.
"Yeah...it's fine. Let's just go." you muttered. Your mom followed along, her eyebrows furrowed in concern. You hopped into the passengers seat of the car. The door closed beside you as your mom got into the driver's seat. She started the car and turned the radio down, indicating that she was planning on talking to you. She turned in her seat to face you.
"Y/N..." she started. You tilted your head back and groaned softly, looking over to her with your head tilted back onto the seat. She raised her eyebrow and huffed out a small laugh.
"Can you do me a favor?"
"Sure. Why not." you said, sitting up in your seat.
"Ask Tommy to prom." she said. You paused, staring forward at the car's glove box. Your eyebrows furrowed a little and your face heated up a little. You had thought about it recently. You really had. A part of you wanted to ask him. Then, you reminded yourself of reality and shook your head.
"He's asking someone else out." you said. She sighed and looked out the front window as she gripped the steering wheel and backed out of the parking space.
"You missed out, Y/N." she said, grinning a little. You hugged your arms and slipped your legs up to press your knees against your chest.
"I really did, didn't I...?" you said slowly. Your mother's eyes darted to you for a second before looking back to the road.
"Is there something you're not telling me?" she asked. You shrugged.
"I just think he might have been the only one who would be willing to go to prom with me at all." you said. Your mom reached over and patted your knee.
"Aw, don't say that. I'm sure there are plenty of boys in your school who would love to go out with you."
"Prom is in three days. I've given up hope at this point." you said. She sighed and shook her head.
"Do you know who Tommy's asking out?" she asked. You shrugged.
"He won't tell me." you mumbled, looking out the car's window. Your mom's talking blurred out of your mind as you focused on everything passing the car. You saw couples walking together, dates out at cafés, and girl's walking out of stores with their boyfriend, skipping in joy. You felt a ping of jealousy in your heart.
More importantly, you couldn't help but picture a specific someone there with you in all of these scenarios.
It was all Tommy in your head. Your hand gripping his as you two walked out of a café together. Your head rested on his shoulder. Your ears were filled with his laugh. Your mind full of his smile. His eyes on yours. You knew that you smiled every time you saw him. You could feel your heart flutter every time you had his attention. You understood why.
You had a crush on Tommy. No, you were head over heels for that boy. You felt a smile stretch across your face as you rested your head on your arms. You were in love with your best friend and finally...you were okay with it.
You let out a small sigh as you leaned back into your seat. You stared forward, your smile faltering a little at the thought of Tommy dancing with some other girl at prom. Tommy's arms wrapped around her waist as you had to watch from the sidelines. You felt jealousy fill a pit in your stomach. You looked over to your mom.
"Mom..."
"Yeah?"
"You know what?" she looked over to you, raising her eyebrow.
"Hm?"
"I wish Tommy asked me to prom." she smiled a little.
"Oh? And why's that?" she asked. You chuckled and hid your grin with your sleeves, tilting your head down in slight embarrassment,
"It's because I have a crush on him..."
