Janis is making herself dinner and trying not to think too deeply about her life when she gets the message.

Getting a text from Cady is normal, they usually chat a bit at least once a day. Sometimes it's just a good morning or goodnight message, but it's still nice to keep in touch. Cady's busy with her studies and work and husband, and Janis is busy with her own work and her cat and trying to get her commissions business up and running. Getting in touch whenever they can is normal.

What isn't normal is Cady's tone within the text.

caddycat: Hey are you busy??

jayjay: nah i'm just making dinner

jayjay: why what's up

caddycat: Could I maybe come over for a little bit???

caddycat: Please

jayjay: yeah ofc

jayjay: is everything ok ??

caddycakes: I don't know yet

jayjay: uhm... ok

jayjay: let me know if u need anything

caddycakes: I will

caddycakes: Thank you Jay

caddycakes: I'll be over in an hour

jayjay: anytime <33

Cady knocks on the door an hour later. Janis opens it to find her visibly shaking and clutching a shopping bag.

"Hey, Cads," she says. "Need a hug?"

"Please," Cady replies, sounding seconds away from tears. Janis immediately pulls her in, kicking the door shut behind Cady and holding her close.

"What's going on?"

Cady inhales sharply. That's never a good sign. She stutters out, "I-I... I think I'm pregnant."

"Oh." Janis says. She peeks into the bag Cady has and finds it to be full of pregnancy tests. "Is this, like, a happy thing? Do you want a baby?"

"I do," Cady says miserably. "But Aaron... I don't-I don't think he does. I don't know what to do, I-"

"Hey, shh," Janis calms. "We don't know for sure yet, there's no reason to freak out now. We'll do the tests when you're ready and go from there, okay?"

"Okay," Cady says, taking some deep breaths.

"Have you eaten? I have extra food," Janis murmurs. "It's just chicken and rice, it should go down easy."

"That sounds nice," Cady replies. "Hi Picasso."

Janis' cat beeps at her in reply, confused as to why she's not picking him up for cuddles and pets like she normally does. He purrs and winds around their legs to try to coax some response.
