Janis Sarkisian has a superpower.

Well, kind of. Everything she's ever drawn has come to life. She likes to think that counts.

-

Janis discovered what she could do when she was in kindergarten. She had spent the whole morning coloring the most perfect tree she could possibly imagine, complete with a bird's nest high in the branches.

The teachers were confused when there was a new tree on the playground at recess. When Janis looked at her drawing, the tree was gone and an empty white area was in its place. When her father came to pick her up, he found her holding up the drawing to compare the shapes.

"Daddy, I drew that tree," tiny Janis said as she pointed to it. "I put the nest up there."

"Did you now?" Her father had asked, coming up behind her and crouching down to her height. "Well, you did a fine job. The branches look sturdy, they'll be good for climbing. The trunk looks strong, and the roots are thick. The tree will be healthy and stay there for a long time. And the birds have a home. Good job, kiddo."

Janis beamed at him with her missing front teeth. "You don't think I'm pretending?"

"'Course not," her father said. "Let's go home, I'll show you why."

-

Janis sat at the kitchen table and kicked her feet back and forth while she waited for her dad. He came back with a fish tank and some water, a pad of paper and some crayons, and a small lump of clay.

"Alright, rock star, you ready?" he asked, sitting across from her. Janis nodded excitedly. He poured the water into the tank, left over from when Janis had had a pet fish a while ago (named Bubbles, in a stroke of five-year-old creativity). He hadn't lasted terribly long.

Janis instantly dove into the crayons when they were slid in front of her, pulling out all her favorite colors.

"Draw a fish," her dad told her. "Any kind you want. I'm going to sculpt one, then we'll see what happens."

Janis drew a rainbow fish, like in her favorite book. Her dad carefully sculpted a goldfish with his clay. Janis liked watching her dad sculpt. She liked watching a lump of mush turn into such beautiful things.

Janis added a mouth and eyes to her own fish, then set the crayons down. Her father finished soon after and called her over to wait with him. Janis sat on his knee and watched their creations intently. Suddenly, the tail of the sculpted fish twitched. Janis gasped as, before her eyes, it seemed to come to life. Her father helped her scoop it up and carefully plop it into the tank.

Once it hit the water, it was a live fish. Scales and gills and all. She heard a wet noise, and looked to see her own creation flopping around on the table. Janis added it to the tank too and looked in wonder at their creations.
