"You excited?" Damian asks, yanking his duffel bag out from the pile by the bus.
Janis snorts. "Yeah, two months in the wilderness with no modern amenities, sounds great."
"There's plumbing," Damian offers. Janis hauls her own duffel over her shoulder and rolls her eyes. "Come on, you had a great time last year. And the year before."
"Yeah, exactly. I've been here twice before. It's the woods. I've seen all there is to see," Janis grumbles, trekking after him through a small clearing to see the cabin assignments, otherwise known as which tiny building with one bathroom she'll be sharing with four other girls for two-thirds of her summer.
"You haven't seen my Lumiere," Damian hums haughtily, scanning the boys' lists for his name. Janis does the same with the girls'.
"Sycamore," she says. She doesn't recognize any of the names she's been paired with, luckily. It's always easier to start fresh and get to make her own first impressions without it being tainted by the history she has back at school.
"I'm a Walnut."
Janis snorts. "Yeah, you are."
"I will throw you in the lake," Damian threatens as they start hiking towards the cabins.
"As if you could pick me up," Janis retaliates.
"I'd manage."
Janis doesn't doubt that. He may not be the strongest physically, but Damian is definitely committed. She decides to hold her tongue for the time being.
"I still don't understand why they bother separating by gender. Like, at least 75% of us are queer," Damian mutters as they reach the signs pointing to the boys' and girls' cabins.
Janis shrugs. "Management."
Damian nods. "Meet back here?"
"Yeah," Janis says. "I'll beat you back."
"Oh, I'm sure of it."
Janis rolls her eyes as Damian flounces off in the direction of his cabin and starts trudging her way to hers. She's been in this particular one before, the first time Damian dragged her to camp. It's strangely familiar, in both an eerie and comforting way. That strange smell the cabins always have, the bunks all in a row against each wall. The green floors that are always a little dusty no matter how much you sweep. And, most familiar of all, the jarring lack of air conditioning.
Blessedly, someone she's bunked with was smart enough to bring a fan, which is going full blast in the corner. A few of the beds already have sheets on and things scattered on them, so Janis picks a free one in the corner by a nice window. She makes sure she gets the one facing west so the sun isn't in her eyes first thing in the morning.
She puts a tape label on the footboard with her name, and another on one of the drawers of a matching dresser nearby. She doesn't bother folding her clothes as she stuffs them in, but does try to keep them vaguely sorted. Shirts, shorts, long stuff for bad weather, underpants, socks. Good enough.
