Honeydew
AN: Spin-off/sequel/prequel/companion piece to "New"
"Wait for me, Nini! Hold on!" Ricky called out after his girlfriend as she ran through the streets near his apartment.
"You've gotta be faster than that, Ricky! I think I can see the blue moon!" Nini yelled back, not slowing her pace. Ricky chased after her until she came to a stop in the park a few blocks from his home. Her gaze was fixed upwards as she looked at the moon.
Ricky approached her slowly, out of breath, wrapped his arm around her shoulders, and pulled her close.
"Just look at it." Nini whispered. "It's beautiful."
"Mmhm." Ricky murmured, he was more focused on the girl next to him than the moon in the sky above him.
"Are you even looking?" Nini asked, finally peeling her eyes away from the night sky to look at him.
"What? Yeah, totally." Ricky said, snapping his head up towards the moon. Nini was right, the moon was radiating a soft blue tint, and it was easy to be transfixed by it.
"You see it too, right?" Nini whispered, snuggling closer into his side as his grip on her shoulders tightened.
"I do, honey. It's nice."
"It reminds me that we live in color. You know?"
"What? Of course we live in color, silly."
"But everyone in the world is seeing this blue moon instead of the boring grey one. It's amazing how the world works like that."
"I guess so." Ricky responded. He loved listening to her talk about things she was passionate about. She got this glimmer in her eyes, and her face always lit up like a circuit board. It almost made him forget the aching in his soul.
Almost.
The thing with Nini was, Ricky had come to learn, is that she wasn't sure how to love. She didn't know how to deal with complicated feelings like that. She couldn't express her love as easily as Ricky could. It was something she'd told Ricky from the get-go as soon as they started dating.
He had assured her that it was okay. She didn't need to feel the pressure of having to reciprocate all that he gave her. He understood that she'd been hurt in the past, and that she wasn't trying to be difficult. She loved him, she'd told him that repeatedly, but she couldn't help but feel the guilt that it wasn't enough. He always reminded her that it was.
It was always the little things with her. A simple kiss on the cheek, or even her running her thumb across his knuckles would remind Ricky that she truly meant what she said. She always insisted that he deserved more from her, not knowing that everything she does, even if it's just being in her presence, is all Ricky needs.
Nini shows that she loves him without her realizing.
He wouldn't lie, it hurt a bit to have her not show all that she said that she felt for him, but he loved her too much to have that get in the way. It scared him a little bit, to know that maybe all that she said wasn't true to how she really felt, but he trusted her. Because when she smiles at him, or hugs him, or kisses him, or even glances his way; it comforts all his fears.
Nini just could never understand that no matter what she does, it's perfect for Ricky.
*****
Ricky was lost. He still couldn't comprehend all that had happened, it had happened all too quickly.
One minute, she was here in his apartment, singing and dancing around his kitchen, and the next, she's closing his front door quietly with tears streaming down her face.
