Over-the-Ocean Call (Andrew)

AN: Here is the final part to my story "Oceans" which can be found in my first one shot book! Make sure you read that story first before reading this. I've had this one planned out for quite a while, and I'm glad I can finally post it.

"Hi! You've reached Ricky Bowen! I can't make it to my phone right now, but I'll call you back as soon as I get the chance!" Ricky's voice carried through the speaker on Nini's phone as she tried to reach him for the third time that night.

"At the tone, please record your message." The robotic voice told her, "BEEP!"

"Hey Ricky, it's me again. I haven't heard from you since your last letter a few days ago, and I'm starting to get worried." Nini says into the phone, repeating the same message she'd left for him the previous two times she'd gotten his voicemail that night. "We agreed to only call and text for emergencies, and I figure this is an emergency. Please answer your phone, or send me a text so I know you're alive. I love you." She said, ending her message, and throwing her phone onto her bed next to her.

It doesn't make sense to her that Ricky would all of a sudden not answer his phone for 3 days straight, and Nini began to worry. They'd never gone this long without talking, not after they decided they should be allowed to text each other, realizing they weren't able to wait the week between each letter anymore. What if something bad happened to him? What if he got sent to a super strict boarding school? Worst of all, what if he didn't love her anymore?

That last thought stuck out like a sore thumb in her mind. What if he didn't love her anymore? What if the distance was finally too much? What if he met someone else?

She tried her best to rationalize why he wouldn't be answering her calls, but her mind kept going to the extreme. She couldn't let this be the thing that breaks them apart.

Nini went to bed that night with tears forming in her eyes. She didn't want to think that this was the beginning of her and Ricky's demise.

*****

Nini's mind was far away, and it was sort of strange. All she could think about was Ricky. It had been almost two weeks without any word from him, and now she really was worried. He meant so much to her, and to have him completely ghost her was abnormal and hurtful.

She really hoped it wouldn't come down to this, since she wanted to hear from him immediately, but she decided to write him another letter. Their original form of communication only reserved for longer messages and care packages.

            Hey.                                                                                                                             03.04.22

Feels weird writing you like this, especially considering I haven't heard from you in almost two weeks. Are you okay? I miss you. I'd really just like to know if you were still alive. I hope everything is alright. I'm not sure what's going on over the ocean in Salt Lake, but I can only hope I'll hear from you soon.

Love, Nini

After she sealed her letter, she sat at her desk for a few beats, staring at her wall. She didn't expect herself to cry, but here she was, allowing the tears to flow down her cheeks, dotting themselves across her lavender stationary. With a final sniffle, she wiped her face clean, and went to take her letter to the nearest mail collection box.

Before sliding the letter through the slot, she placed a kiss to it, hoping that her last ditch attempt to reach out to the boy across the ocean would work
