To The Mountains
AN: This is just shy of 17k words. Yeah, I know. I hope y'all enjoy it, because it took me forever to write. Please vote and comment, it keeps me going :)
CW// Kinda steamy, but also not really??? It's def not smut, but it's a bit more mature than what I've written in the past. You'll know it when you see it.
Nini coughed as the smog from nearby trucks wafted in her direction, not being able to stand the dirty air that came with living in New York City. She winced hearing the squeal of said trucks halting to a stop at the next red light. She gagged when she saw a rat run across the sidewalk in front of her. It was late, close to 2am, and all Nini wanted to do was go home, and go to bed.
Nini sighed, turning down the block to her apartment building. She trudged up the molding steps before coming to her apartment door, twisting the key every which way to get the door to swing open. She dropped her bag next to the entryway table, and looked to see her boyfriend, EJ, passed out on the couch, no doubt asleep after being out drinking with his coworkers.
"Hey," She whispered, poking his cheek, "I'm home."
Her boyfriend didn't budge, his snores increasing in volume. Annoyed, Nini slipped off her shoes and threw herself onto their bed, not bothering to change into her pajamas before she was out cold.
The next morning, Nini woke up to the sound of the apartment door slamming shut, indicating that her boyfriend had just left for work. Nini groaned as she rolled around in bed. She stared up at the popcorn ceiling, trying to force herself to get out of bed. She was exhausted, having spent the entire night before on her feet for almost 6 hours.
Although it was nothing new for her nights and mornings to be like this, it didn't mean that Nini enjoyed it. Being a waitress was one of the few jobs that Nini was able to get, not having a big fancy degree like EJ did. He worked at a big accounting firm in the city, so he was definitely the breadwinner of the two.
She couldn't afford to go to college, as her family wasn't very fortunate growing up. She took a few classes at a community college near her house in Salt Lake City to try her best to get a degree, and that's how she met EJ. The two had gone to high school together, but neither of them knew of each other because of the size of the school. EJ had gone off to Duke, and he returned to Salt Lake one summer to do some extra credit courses.
She and EJ had hit it off almost immediately, and continued to keep in touch even after EJ went back to Duke that next semester. EJ had graduated early, and moved back home for a little bit before landing a huge job out in NYC. He and Nini had just started dating, but he had convinced her to move out to the city with him. Nini, not knowing when she'd ever get a chance to leave her town again, moved in with him. She dropped out of community college just a few months short of when she was going to graduate.
It had started out okay, with Nini being excited to be in a new environment. But soon, she realized that she should've stayed home. Living with EJ was nothing like she had expected. He would leave early in the morning, and return home after she had already left for her own job. They barely had time for each other anymore, and when they did, Nini couldn't stand him.
EJ had turned into a big corporate junkie whose mind was solely focused on his job and making more money. He was constantly trying to convince Nini to invest in stocks, and dragging her to fancy dinners and events. He had rented out a larger apartment in Lower Manhattan, close to Wall Street, close to his job. Her job was all the way in Midtown, so the commute was horrendous. It was almost like he didn't think about her at all. He wasn't the same EJ that Nini had fallen for back in college. He was more like a roommate than a boyfriend.
