Are U Okay?

AN: I'm not entirely sure what this is.

Sometimes waking up in the middle of the night can mean different things to different people. It might be a relief that the person doesn't have to get up quite yet, and they can continue to sleep. It might induce stress, as the person feels like they woke up because they forgot something important. It could also mean that the person is sick, and their body needs to try and get the virus out, and doesn't want to wait until morning to do so. For Nini, it meant worry and doubt.

She heard someone say that you can only fall asleep if you feel truly safe and comfortable. If she woke up in the middle of the night, could she really be in the right place?

That's how she ended up staring up at the ceiling at 3am on a random Tuesday night. She became very aware of her surroundings. The fuzziness of her comforter heavy on her body, pinning her softly to her bedsheets. The soft hum of her heater working overdrive, because it's a winter night in Salt Lake City. She could kind of see the small glow of her hallway light that had been left on through the cracks in her door.

She felt alone. The air felt still. The loneliness was scary. She doesn't feel safe when she's alone.

Is she even real? Can she even feel all the things she feels? Where was she really? Does she need to get out of here? Is she really safe? Is she really comfortable? Is this it? Is this the end? Is this what it feels like to die in your sleep?

She feels like she's drowning in glue, the thick liquid filling her lungs, and she can't do anything to stop it. Nini soon becomes very aware of her breathing, trying to get the glue to leave her body. Her breaths turn from slow and deep, to quick and short as she tries to get the glue out of her system.

Nini could feel herself overheating, and tears began to flow down her pink cheeks as she realized that the glue wasn't leaving, it was sticking to her lungs. Her breaths became louder. She wasn't safe, she needed to get out. She was alone, and she was scared.

She sat up in her bed, the tears dripping down to her tank top, and the glue began to sink into the rest of her body. At this, something shifted next to her, and Nini remembered that she wasn't alone; relief washed over her almost immediately. Maybe she was real, maybe they were feeling the things she was trying to feel.

"Nini? Neens, is that you?" the voice said, sitting up next to her, rubbing their eyes to see her clearly.

Nini forgot how to speak, the glue preventing her from saying anything.

"Nini, are you okay?" the voice asked, concern lacing their voice. Nini relaxed a bit when she realized it was her boyfriend, Ricky.

"Not at all." Nini was able to choke out, and that caused the boy next to her to jump into action.

"Shit, what do you need from me?" he said, immediately wrapping her up in his arms, holding her face with his hand, and stroking her cheek softly.

"I... I don't know."

"Do you just need me to hold you? I know waking up in the middle of the night can be scary." Ricky said, trying to comfort her, and Nini only nodded slowly.

Ricky held her close to his chest, and Nini slowly felt the glue leak from her body, she could breathe better now. She looked out their bedroom window and saw that it was raining, she could see the water falling in the illumination from the street lamp.

"It's raining." she whispered, her breaths evening out. It was almost like Ricky holding her like this squeezed the glue from her, and the rain was washing it all away.
