Give Me A Minute

AN: This one's for you Cait. You're welcome.

"It's no one's fault! Stop blaming it on yourself!" Nini screamed at her soon to be ex boyfriend. She was rushing around his apartment, trying to pack up as many of her things as possible.

"But Neens, obviously I did something to make you want to leave me! Just tell me what I did wrong, and I'll fix it! I want– need us to work out!" He yelled back at her.

"Nothing! You did absolutely nothing wrong. I can't stay here anymore. I don't want this life anymore. Just, give me a minute to myself." she told him. "It's what I've been trying to tell you for the past hour, but you keep insisting that you did something wrong."

"Why don't you want this life anymore? You told me that you wanted to be with me!"

"It's not that I don't want to be with you, it's just– you and I are on two different paths now. I thought that staying with you here would be what I wanted, but I don't think it is. I need to get out of here. I don't want to stay here in this city anymore."

"Whatever it is you need me to do, Neens, I'll do it. Just tell me. You want me to leave with you? I will! Just say the word."

"No! I can't let you do anything. I can't let you give up everything you built here. You just got a huge promotion, and I'm still working the coffee shop job I've had since I graduated high school! I've got to find something else for myself. I can't let myself get stuck here. It's not you, I promise. I need to say goodbye to these skies, okay?" Nini explained.

"I just don't understand where all of this is coming from..."

"I've been thinking about it for a while. I want to do something else with my life! I've lived here for over two decades, and I want to find somewhere different to go. I don't want to feel stuck."

"But... you promised. We were supposed to be that couple. We were supposed to be the couple that survived high school, and college, and everything that came after that. That was supposed to be us."

"I–I didn't promise you anything. Don't put words in my mouth." Nini snapped as she finished grabbing all her things and made her way to the front door. "I need to do this, okay? Maybe I can see myself coming back here, but right now I can't stay here."

"If you'd just listen to me, maybe you could stay. You're making a mistake."

"I'm done listening! I'm done listening to other people who think they know what's best. I need to listen to myself for once."

"But Nini–"

"Don't call me that. It's Nina." She griped, opening the door and walking out.

"Nina, please. Wait!" He called out.

"Goodbye, EJ."

Maybe New York City wasn't the best idea. It was too expensive for Nini. She regretted her choice once she got on the train that took her east.

She pressed her face against the cool glass, watching as the city she'd lived in for her whole life slowly moved out of frame. She couldn't help the small tear that escaped her eyes, thinking about everything she was leaving behind.

Nini knew that she'd long outgrown her life in Salt Lake as soon as she graduated high school. In a place that she knew every corner and back alley of, she wanted a new sense of adventure. But then EJ convinced her to stay in state while he went to college since she wasn't going to school, then he got an amazing job, then he bought an apartment for the two of them to share, and she couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't help but feel like she'd missed out on the time of her life where she could do anything. She felt tied to Salt Lake, to EJ, to her old job, and it was time to escape.
