Nini winced as her new boyfriend, EJ, dragged her by the elbow through the crowded hallways of a high school party.
"EJ!" She called out over the blasting music, "Slow down! You're hurting me!"
"Just hang on for two seconds." EJ called back, annoyed.
"Where are you taking me?" She asked him but her question got answered when she was shoved into a circle of what she assumed were EJ's water polo buddies.
"You guys, this is Nini." EJ introduced her proudly to the group of gawking boys. They all stepped closer to her, almost like they were inspecting her. She saw some of them nod and whisper to each other and also frown and shake their heads. It was like she was being put on trial to see if she was a worthy girlfriend for EJ.
"She looks nice." One of the guys said, "How'd you meet her?"
"We're lab partners in chemistry. She gives me all the answers" EJ chuckled.
"A smart girl, huh?" Another one spoke up, "Might want to keep her around. At least until you graduate."
"You know it!" EJ laughed, high-fiving him.
"A bit flat though." A third guy said, his gaze focused on Nini's chest. "Is that going to be an issue?"
"Nah, I can make it work." EJ told him, and Nini folded her arms across her body to hide more of her chest.
"She could use to smile more. Might help to distract from the acne." the third guy continued.
"Does she even speak?" The first guy asked.
"Of course, she speaks dumbass!" The second guy chastised him, "Well... does she?" He asked EJ.
"Oh yeah. C'mon, Nini. Say something."
Nini's eyes went wide as the focus was put back on her. She gulped and went to open her mouth, but she panicked. She was already being placed under a microscope, so her words were about to be heavily inspected and criticized. She closed her mouth again. She'd rather be silent than having another thing about her be judged.
"You dating a mute?" The second guy said.
"She's just being shy." EJ told them, giving Nini a bit of a glare. "Besides, her mouth is better for other things if you know what I'm saying!"
EJ's words were met with an uproar of cheers and hollering. Nini took this as a chance to slip away from the situation. EJ hadn't told her that his friends were so objectifying and rude. Tears slipped down her face as she pushed her way through the crowd to leave the house.
"Hey," She heard someone say to her softly as she walked by. They grabbed her lightly by the elbow and held her back. "I saw what happened over there, are you alright?"
Nini looked over to see who had grabbed her and recognized it to be Ricky Bowen, who sat near her in AP Lit and was in a few of her other classes. She didn't know him that well, and she was confused as to why he was checking in on her.
"Yeah. I'm fine." She mumbled.
"You sure?"
Nini sniffled as more tears ran down her face. "I'm fine."
"I'm here if you need anything."
"I don't even know you. Just leave me alone." She snipped, and with that, she walked away.
