Chapter 20

There were no words when they arrived. No villain speech or a beat before the fight. They emerged from the trees, sprinting with teeth barred, eyes red, and skin pale. The Cullens stood defensively in the clearing as I crouched behind a tree, listening to the pack rustling around me. Animalistic sounds, heaving and growling grew louder as the newborns arrived. My skin tingled and my hairs stood on end. The urge to turn burned beneath my skin but we couldn't let anyone see my form for fear of spreading my secret.

There was a pulsating in my head, hot and searing that ignited behind my eyes. I had to control it, but the anger wasn't helping. I wanted to kill something, I wanted to fight. My body screamed at me, telling me that this would solve my problems.

Sam agreed to let me fight, but I had to stay a vampire. Unfortunately, the desire to turn was becoming unbearable and I knew I had to join quickly before I couldn't stop myself.

As the pack pounced over head into the clearing, I darted out behind them to see the carnage. Newborns were strong but not skilled, and that advantage was putting us ahead. I sprinted at the nearest enemy, eyes burning with the fresh wound from last night. I could barely feel myself climbing atop a man, digging my fist in his throat and splitting his jaw open. He lay limp on the floor but that didn't satisfy me.

A veil of hate glazed over my eyes and I could see nothing but dummies to kill. The sound of death like shattered glass rang in my ears. By the time I'd reach Emmett, a body of three trailed behind me.

"Nice work Dawn!" He said, but all I could do was huff in response. A coherent sentence was too hard to muster as my eyes fixated on my next target. I fought the feeling of the wolf tearing forward and reeled back a punch that cracked the skull of my opponent. My foot crashed into her teeth but I kept going, lifting my knee and bringing my foot down on her face until their was nothing left but a pile of shattered porcelain with eyes that stared back at me.

"Dawn?!" I heard Emmett call, but I ignored him, guttural noises gurgling from the base of my throat. It was the only thing I could do to contain the change.

The next target had his back to me and I managed to climb my way up his back, sink my teeth into his glass skin and tear out shards of his neck with my mouth. I ripped his throat to shreds before he fell limp to the ground.

"Dawn!" Emmett called again and when I turned shouting "What!" A force hit me from behind and sent me skyward. I was airborne for longer than I'd like to admit. But eventually my back hit a boulder and I thought I heard something crack inside me.

Black dots inked my vision but I could see just enough to watch a newborn sprinting at me. My body ached and pain spread across my side. I must have broken a rib or two, and the strength to stand was waging against the pain burning in my body.

Just before the vampire was upon me, a hulking grey figure leaped at it.

It was Sam.

He shredded the thing with foam spilling from his mouth, and teeth the size of my hand. He gave me a look that I couldn't decipher before running off.

In a minute, Jasper was at my side. "What are you doing!" He hissed, helping me up. "You're going nuts, you need to calm down and think straight. They're stronger than you."

I groaned in response, annoyed or angry or both. Pain and anger filled my mind and I couldn't come up with anything to say back. "You're going to get yourself killed," he said before leaning me up against the boulder. "Stay here, and don't move."

"But-"

Jasper shot me a look that warned against doing anything stupid. I knew he cared about me but all I could think was how stupid this was. I was sick and tired of people underestimating me. Who does he think he is? I've been fighting longer than he was born, way before he knew vampires existed. I could kill a hundred of those newborns before he could ever catch up, but one slip and suddenly I'm too weak to be left alone to fight. I'm just as capable, if not more than any of them.
