Jana's POV
Several weeks went by and Hunter and I grew closer and closer. I desperately wanted to ask Hunter for his phone number, but I was too scared to do that.
The fall ball is Friday. I wasn't sure who I would hang out with there. At these events I usually hung out with Josie and Chris, but they were a couple now. It would be awkward for me to have to run off the dance floor every time a slow song came on so they could be alone. Dances didn't really seem to be Hunter's type of thing, so I decided I wouldn't go unless someone asked me. I had two days to score a date.
I walked out of the school and into the courtyard for lunch. I had stopped sitting with Josie and Chris at lunch because I felt like I was intruding. I'd been sitting with Hunter for the past three weeks.
Someone tapped on my shoulder causing me to turn around. It was Josh Manor.
"Hey Jana!" he said.
Hunter's POV
Today was the day. I had finally built up enough courage. I was going to ask Jana out. It was perfect timing due to the dance on Friday. I even bought roses before school to give to Jana.
I saw her come out of the school. I was already at our spot for lunch. I grabbed the roses and put them behind my back. I ran over to Jana, only to see Josh was talking to her.
"Josh?" Jana questioned after he greeted her.
"Jana, will you go to the dance with me?" Josh asked, taking her hand in his.
"Sure! Yeah, absolutely...woah, yes!" she replied excitedly.
"Great! It's a date then," Josh said casually, biting his lip. He kissed her cheek before walking away.
I quickly shoved my flowers in the trash can and ran back to our seat before Jana turned around.
It was hopeless. Why would she like me when she could have him? I was biting back tears as Jana came in my direction with a huge smile plastered on her face.
"Hunter! Guess what?" Jana exclaimed excitedly.
"Hello to you to!" I responded. She playfully slapped my stomach. "What?" I responded, mimicking her excitement.
She rolled her eyes and announced, "JOSH ASKED ME TO THE DANCE!" Jana covered her mouth.
"Awesome!" I started. "Do you even like him?" A huge fake smile was on my face. What kind of a friend would I be if I didn't at least pretend to be happy for her?
"Yes! I've liked him since sixth grade."
She had liked him since sixth grade? If she liked guys like Josh, I would never be good enough for her. I was stupid to have even thought she could have liked me.
